We are seeking an ELL teacher who is passionate about educational equity, driven by student and family relationships, and provides intentional support for their students.

Job Description

Our English Language Learner (ELL) Teachers are part of our Student Support Services Team, working closely with teachers, principals and other service providers to serve our linguistically diverse students who have a composite English Language Proficiency (ELP) level of less than 5.0 on the annual ACCESS 2.0 assessment for ELLs. The ELL teacher helps to ensure that identified students are able to reach a proficient achievement level on state tests, succeed in their academic classrooms, and achieve English language fluency in listening, speaking, reading and writing through language instruction in individual, small group and co-taught settings. Additionally, ELL teachers monitor the academic success of students who scored proficient on ACCESS 2.0 for up to four years. ELL teachers work across grade levels and our network of schools and report to the Campus Director and ELL coordinator.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Student Support
  • Develop individualized language goals for each student aligned to their English language proficiency and WIDA ELD Standards Framework
  • Provide individualized language instruction to help students develop in all four language domains: listening, speaking, reading and writing
  • Provide instruction that is consistent and coordinated with KIPP DC's instructional program so as to ensure that students meet and exceed learning targets
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans that utilize a broad range of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies
  • Build rapport and establish strong relationships with students' teachers and family to work in collaboration towards English language proficiency
  • Assist and collaborate with general education teachers to deliver scaffolds and differentiation for all four domains of language
  • Plan daily lessons and implement specific strategies to meet the needs of all students, providing extra support, enrichment, or variation of work when necessary
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of student progress and evidence of growth towards language goals
  • Provide a nurturing and supportive learning environment that encourages student responsibility and incorporates challenging instructional strategies
  • Analyze various formative assessments to monitor student understanding
  • Oversee assigned out-of-classroom activities during the school day, as needed


Team Coordination and Documentation
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and responsibilities (i.e. attend meetings, write progress summaries on present levels of performance, and propose ELL goals)
  • Conduct ELL screenings in order to identify students who may require ELL service
  • Assist in the proper referral of students to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate
  • Keep thorough records of service delivery for each student receiving ELL services
  • Assist in development of curriculum standards and mapping
  • Administer the ACCESS test to eligible students

  • Perform clerical duties, as required, relating to curricula and assessment, instructional supplies, student reports and records, attendance reports, etc.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required)
  • At least two years of teaching experience (Required)
  • Passing score on the ESL Praxis Exam (Strongly Preferred)
  • Experience/strength in phonemic awareness and reading remediation (Preferred)
  • Experience working in a public elementary school (Preferred)
  • Experience working in an urban school (Preferred)
  • Deep commitment to racial and educational equity and the building of an organization that reflects the community KIPP DC serves; ability to hold self and others accountable for centering equity
