WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt/10 month

POSITION SUMMARY: The K-4 Special Small Classroom Special Education Teaching Partner is a highly-qualified teacher who assists in implementing special designed instruction to students with significant to severe academic disabilities in a multi-age based setting. The focus of the teaching partner is to effectively plan under the direction of the special education teacher in conjunction with curriculum resources and deliver instruction to a classroom of students with grouped abilities through specially designed instruction to best meet the needs of students and close the achievement gap. The goal of the special education teaching partner is to ensure that students are able to demonstrate growth in the area of reading, writing, mathematics, study skills and social/emotional development in accordance with their IEP goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists in providing whole group, & leads under the direction of the special education teacher individual and small group instruction designed to meet individual needs and motivate students in a small classroom setting.
  • Is a partner in analyzing data in order to effectively meet needs of all students with the classroom teacher
  • Assists in developing lesson plans and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal and/or visual instruction of students with a wide range of intellectual, physical and emotional maturity; including co-planning with general education teacher(s)
  • Is a partner in establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior required to achieve effective participation and learning in all activities and lessons.

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to teaching and instruction of elementary school students and special education, specifically students with Autism (A), Intellectual Disabilities, & Learning Disabilities.
  • Knowledge and practice in using a variety of co-planning models and teaching strategies.
  • Child growth and development and behavior characteristics of elementary school students;
  • Educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives, and the educational trends and research-based findings pertaining to student educational programming;
  • Behavior management and behavior strategies, techniques, methods and conflict resolution procedures;
  • Socio-economic and cultural background differences of general student population; Cultural responsiveness.
  • Technology including devices and computer programs.
  • Commitment to the success of all children
  • Demonstrates success in collaborative teaching, managing a mixed-ability classroom and facilitating performance-based learning.

ABILITY TO:
  • Plan, organize, develop, and enthusiastically conduct a comprehensive teaching and instruction program for students in grades K-4.
  • Work with a variety of teachers to implement best practices and models for the teaching of special education students.
  • Provide effective learning experiences for students with a wide range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Effectively assess and progress monitor the educational needs of students in order to design, develop and implement sound educational plans.
  • Effectively communicate progress with teachers, families & administration
  • Flexibility and possess' characteristics of a team player with abilities to co-teach within generale education when applicable.
  • Collaborate and manage a teaching partner in the role of classroom teacher to maximize student engagement and learning.



SCHOOL CULTURE/CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create and maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment for students that includes SEL and restorative practices. Model, practice and discuss respectful, unbiased and effective communication with students.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing norms expectations, and procedures and building relationships as the foundation.
  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students in diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
  • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
  • Engage students in age appropriate discussions of diversity and equity. Use student observations, questions, actions and reactions as teachable moments to issues that arise.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Demonstrates success in collaborative teaching, managing classroom and facilitating performance-based learning.
  • Participate in appropriate professional development activities.

FAMILY COMMUNICATION AND INVOLVEMENT:
  • Support the classroom teacher in preparing progress summaries using the reporting procedures (e.g. modified report cards as appropriate) agreed upon by the teaching staff and the Principal. Collaborate as needed with other teachers.
  • Conduct Student Led Conferences with the Special Education Teacher & families twice per year.
  • Keep families informed about classroom activities and units of study through ongoing communication
  • Attend and participate in school events.
  • Assist in checking voicemail and email daily and respond promptly or within 24 hours to requests from families, administrators and colleagues.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Tapestry Charter School mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Professional/Permanent certification in applicable grades/subject area (Students with Disabilities). Classroom experience is essential.
