This is for a 1.0 FTE position. Monday through Friday 7.5 hours per day. We will be hiring for 2 positions. BASIC FUNCTION:
The building-based EL specialist is a certificated position, focused on K-12 KSD instructional support for teaching students who are acquiring English (English learners, ELs). The assignment for this position will be determined by the KSD Multilingual Education team in the Teaching and Learning Community. The purpose of this position is to provide support for increasing teacher capacity and to assist schools in closing the achievement gap for EL students by implementing the district's research based EL instructional model and instructional strategies for effectively teaching language within content using schoolwide collaborative strategies. This specialist will coach school staff in implementing the KSD Collaborative Teaching Model, using best practice strategies, closing the achievement gap, and increasing rigor through collaborative practice. The Building-Based EL Specialist will provide regular, ongoing professional learning for teachers to effectively meet the needs of ELs at all levels of language acquisition through core instruction that includes language scaffolds.


E = ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provides coaching, modeling, and planning support to teachers to increase their skill level in meeting the academic needs of English learners in their classrooms.

Works with teachers, EL specialists/co-teachers, building level coaches and specialists, and other school staff to fully integrate language development strategies, scaffolds, differentiated instruction, collaborative practices, and WA ELP Standards in all aspects of classroom and schoolwide practice.

Delivers research-based, district-aligned EL professional development to teachers and support staff on an ongoing basis.

Assigns, trains, and helps plan instruction for EL para educators, in conjunction with co-teaching planning and PLCs.

Co-teach with grade level teachers, content area teachers, and PLCs using Honigsfeld/Dove model for Collaboration and Co-Teaching per agreement between the building principal and the Director of Multilingual Education.

Attends regularly scheduled ELL training, and communicates directly and regularly with District ELL Specialists/Coordinators and the Director of Multilingual Education.

Participates in regular, ongoing professional development for English language development, collaborative teaching, content area, and grade level instruction.

Primary case manager for all EL students:
  • Ensures proper placement of all EL students following district guidelines, EL program model, and federal guidelines, ensuring that students' civil rights are upheld.
  • Tracks all language development and academic achievement data for EL students.

Communicates, meets with, and advocates for families of ELL students to ensure that:
  • Families feel welcome and valued as members of their school.
  • Families are invited to authentically engage in their child's education.
  • Families have accurate information about the district's model for language development services, and understand the services their child is receiving and why.
  • Families understand that they can make choices about their child's education.
  • Families thoroughly understand graduation requirements, and how their child will be provided with a path to graduation regardless of the student's level of language proficiency.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • ELL or Bilingual Ed endorsement required.
  • K-8 teaching cert required for all elementary candidates.
  • ELA or other content area endorsement required for all secondary candidates.
  • Minimum 2 years of documented successful previous elementary classroom teaching experience required for elementary candidates.
  • Minimum 2 years of documented successful previous secondary content area teaching experience required for secondary candidates.
  • Demonstrated expertise in WA English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) as aligned to CCSS/NGSS.
  • Demonstrated personal and professional belief that all students, including English learners, can learn and can perform at grade level or higher.
  • Demonstrated personal and professional belief that English learners and other culturally and linguistically diverse students and families are assets to the Kent School District and community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Evidence of instructional coaching program completion and successful previous instructional coaching experience preferred.

  • Demonstrated and thorough understanding of:
  • KSD program models for English learners.
  • Honigsfeld and Dove Collaborative Teaching model.
  • SIOP sheltered instruction framework.
  • Marzano high-yield strategies as an instructional framework.
  • Academic language and literacy for language acquisition.
  • Explicit training in culturally relevant instructional strategies.
  • Other research-proven instructional approaches for successfully teaching English language learners.
  • KSD Curriculum Center including pacing guides, frameworks, district-adopted grade level and content area materials.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Effectively and successfully coach, plan with, and co-teach with a variety of other teachers at various grade levels and across content areas.
  • Effectively plan and deliver CCSS/NGSS/ELPS-aligned instruction utilizing district-adopted, grade-level appropriate curricular materials.
  • Effectively plan and deliver KSD Collaborative Teaching professional learning to instructional and support staff, and assist building administrators in schoolwide implementation of collaborative planning and teaching to support English learners.
  • Effectively plan and deliver ELPS-aligned formative language development assessments and track student language development progress.
  • Use sheltered instruction strategies to make content accessible to language learners at all levels of language proficiency.
  • Scaffold and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of language learners at all levels of language proficiency.
  • Disaggregate ELPA21 results and apply additional formative assessment to accurately determine and implement appropriate language development strategies for increasing English language learners' proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing within core instruction.
  • Effectively use all available data to inform instructional planning for ELD.
  • Carry out all federal, state, and district requirements regarding the education of ELs.
  • Lead for systemic change while building and maintaining excellent collegial relationships.

  • Physical activity may be required, which could include moderate lifting.
