School Counselor - Senior High

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Iowa certification in secondary counseling required
  2. Master's degree in counselor education required
  3. Previous counseling experience in grades 9 to 12 level preferred
  4. Group counseling experience with parents, teachers, and students, preferred
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: School Principal

JOB GOAL: To perform regular guidance and counseling duties as outlined under performance responsibilities

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Academic/Career
  2. Assist with post-secondary planning (including assistance with applications, letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.)
  3. Schedule students into appropriate classes
  4. Monitor academic progress
  5. Facilitate evening programs for parents and students
  6. Participate in child study teams
  7. Serve on special education teams
  8. Participate in special accommodation planning teams (504 plans and assistance plans)
  9. Disseminate scholarship information
  10. Coordinate standardized assessment
    1. ITED (Iowa Test of Educational Development) administered to students in grades 9-11
    2. AP (Advanced Placement) administered to students interested in earning college credit for advanced study in specific subject areas
    3. PSAT (National Merit Scholarship Competition Test) administered primarily to juniors and sophomores; this test serves as the initial step in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
    4. PLAN (Optional ACT developed test for sophomores)
  11. Coordinate PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Option) with Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa
  12. Coordinate graduation activities
  13. Coordinate at-risk services
  14. Provide NCAA Clearinghouse information for students planning to participate in athletics in college at the Division I or Division II level
  15. Collaborate with the Workplace Learning Connection for various career-related educational opportunities (job shadows, internships, practicums, guest speakers, career fairs, etc.)

  1. Social-Emotional
  2. Provide individual and group counseling/skill building
  3. Provide social/emotional support to students, staff, and parents
  4. Refer students to outside agencies when needed
  5. Serve as school contact with outside agencies and support systems
  6. Assist new students as they transition to community or between buildings
  7. Provide crisis counseling
  8. Mediate for students, teachers, parents and/or staff
  9. Provide in-service training as appropriate for faculty
  10. Advocate for self-development (plan/goal setting, self-improvement, behavioral changes, etc.)

  1. Public Relations
  2. Communicate with parents, teachers, faculty, and staff
  3. Serve as school contact with outside agencies (private psychologists, counselors, etc)
  4. Communicate services to parents and students through mailings, phone contacts, classroom presentations, and individual meetings
  5. Communicate accessibility of program to parents and students through mailings, phone contacts, e-mail, classroom presentations, and individual meetings


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work year as established by the Board of Directors. Salary established by district adopted salary schedules.

EVALUATION: Teaching performance will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
