Purpose Statement

The Assistant Principal (AP) supports the Principal in leading the instructional program and ensures its alignment with division regulations for curriculum design and assessment. Provides and promotes a state-of-the-art curriculum and superior instructional delivery for the success of all students. The AP supports the school and works collaboratively with the principal to maintain the educational programs, consistent with community characteristics and school division goals and practices. This job is a direct report to the school Principal.

The George Mason Elementary School. Opened in 1939, the school educates approximately 450 children from the central section of the city and a section of the Arlandria neighborhood. George Mason Elementary School is dedicated to developing students' love of learning, academic excellence, and respect and appreciation for our community's diversity. The school promotes academic excellence for all students built upon the mastery of fundamental learning skills with experiences that foster academic, social, physical, and cognitive growth. The School Division. George Mason Elementary School is a member of the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) in Alexandria, Virginia. The school division serves more than 15,500 students who hail from 114 countries and speak 119 languages. Qualifications

Education: Master's degree.

Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license required or ability to obtain one with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision K-12 within 90 days of hire

Experience: Minimum of 3 years teaching experience.
  • Administrative and teaching experience related to working in socio-economically and culturally diverse school settings.
  • Demonstrated expertise in evidence-based curriculum design, assessment, and instructional practices.
  • Documented experience in leading secondary educational program development and implementation, including professional development in evidence bases best practices for diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience necessary to work effectively with students, teachers, administrators, families, and community members.

Essential Functions

The candidate for this position assists the principal with:

  • Selecting, assigning, orientating, and evaluating staff.
  • Developing, supervising, and evaluating the instructional program.
  • Preparing the school budget and the master schedule.
  • Formulating and implementing professional development activities.
  • Interpreting and enforcing Board policies and regulations as well as school mission and goals.
  • Supervising the use and maintenance of facilities and evaluating custodians.
  • Supervising and coordinating student discipline and welfare.
  • Contributing to the school mission and goals to provide a positive learning climate and supportive community environment.
  • May be assigned other tasks and responsibilities as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment for the school and division.

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
