Purpose of Position

The MMSD Lead School Psychologist supports the core functions of our School Psychologists which include:

  • improving academic achievement,
  • promoting student socio-emotional wellbeing and mental health,
  • lead psychologists in anti-racist and equity work,
  • strengthening integrated school-based student services teams,
  • strengthen processes and equity in special education and 504 evaluations and processes,
  • building a comprehensive and data-driven multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS),
  • improving school-wide assessment and accountability through data-based decision making, and
  • partnering with students and advocating for families through collaborative and equity-based strategies.


The role of a School Psychologist is designed to maximize opportunities for learning and ensure that all students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to achieve personal success as college, career, and community ready individuals.

The Lead School Psychologist is a district-wide leader and member of the Student and Staff Support's (SSS) Leads Team (which includes Lead Counselor, Lead Nurse, Lead Social Worker, and Central Office Administrators). This team supports school-based student services teams, develops district-wide best practices, delivers district-wide professional development, and participates in the creation of a cohesive vision to promote student wellbeing, positive school climate, and effective teaming across the district.

Essential Duties and Responsibilties
  • Engaging School Psychologists in professional capacity building through the provision of professional learning opportunities, coaching, consultation, and mentoring.
  • Lead the School Psychology Advisory in guiding monthly PDs, anti-racist inclusion work and presentations, prioritizing topics, and enhancing School Psychologists' identity, ways of working, and group collaboration and support.

  • Supporting School Psychologists ability to collaborate, engage, and be effective members of school-based student services teams.

  • Ability to reflect and teach core principles of data-based decision making and school-wide accountability strategies.
  • In collaboration with HR and Administrator, lead the identification of open positions for School Psychologists, interview new staff, and support building principals in interviewing candidates.
  • Develop systems, structures, and resources to support professional capacity building for new school psychologists.

  • Support school-based structures such as SSIT, SST, MTSS, IEP evaluations, SRA procedures, individual student problem-solving, interventions, data use, Section 504, student risk assessments, and expulsions.

  • Support the purchasing, training, roll-out, and management of assessment tools.

  • Support Educator Effectiveness and the PDP process for School Psychologists.

  • Deliver trainings in the following: Q-Interactive, Q-Global, and other relevant testing tools/strategies.

  • Provide district-wide leadership, coordination, and evaluation (e.g. SRAs, VRAs) in the mental health area including trauma-informed groups (e.g., CBITS, Bounce Back), socio-emotional screening (e.g., depression, Dane Co. Youth Assessment), and tier 2/3 supports and interventions.

  • Provide district-wide leadership, coordination, and evaluation in the area of restorative critical response, including leading a team, directly supporting schools, and supporting the development of effective district-wide systems and procedures.

  • Participate in (and lead when appropriate) various district and community-wide team and collaborations such as Mental Health Team, AOD Work Group, ADHD Work Group, Diagnostic Assessment Committee, Dane Co. Children's Mental Health Collaborative, Levels Team Meetings, 504 Leadership Team, Restorative Critical Response Team, etc.


Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support additional identified priorities of the SSS Department , such as School Support Requests and school systems improvement.
  • Design and deliver additional professional learning experiences for district staff.
  • Participate in assigned cross-functional work groups & team memberships.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Reports to Coordinator of Student Support Teams in the Department of Student & Staff Support.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Integration of School Psychologist?s role with MMSD?s Strategic Framework, SSSH?s key priorities, and school-specific improvement efforts.

  • Deep understanding of key frameworks and initiatives: Socio-Emotional Learning, Mental Health, SST development, MTSS, Behavior Education Plan, Restorative Approach, Restorative Critical Response, Trauma Sensitive practices, Wellness, and culturally responsive practices.

  • Experience navigating and improving educational systems/structures and implementing best practices, especially in the areas of socio-emotional learning, mental health, behavior, wellness, assessment, and special education.

  • Ability to effectively work as part of a team and collaborate with colleagues by communicating effectively, empowering others, managing conflicts, and holding multiple perspectives.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with all stakeholders including SSS colleagues, central office leaders, school-based administrators, student services staff, students, and families. Advocate on behalf of staff, students, and schools as needed.

  • Ability to design and deliver monthly professional learning opportunities for adult audiences that reflect a commitment and enthusiasm for lifelong learning and professional growth in a variety of areas.

  • Ability to deliver effective coaching, consultation, and mentoring.
  • Provide weekly high quality supervision for new hires who are in their internship year that includes case consultation, instructing in MMSD practices and platforms, answering questions, and educating these new hires in best practices.
  • Ability to support schools, in a leadership role, through a restorative critical response in the event of a crisis or emergency.

  • Able to articulate and show evidence of commitment to equity-focused work and the role that student services staff play in closing opportunity gaps and eliminating inequitable student outcomes.
  • Analyze information, problems, situations, practices or procedures in order to: define the problem, identify relevant concerns, identify patterns, and formulate conclusions.

  • Ability to work independently, navigate complex systems, and perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload.

  • Ability to reflect the highest professional standards and ethics including self-determination, confidentiality, fairness, competence, and accepting responsibility.


Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements
  • Master?s degree or higher in school psychology
  • DPI License 7062 - school psychologist
  • 5 or more years of experience as a school psychologist
  • 1 or more years of experience in leadership role or function
