Description:
This is a consultant position in a school district, responsible for overseeing district-wide auditorium lighting, sound systems, rigging, audio-visual and computerized systems at each middle school and high school. Duties include maintaining a consistent knowledge base, providing training on systems to staff and students, and assisting with productions as needed. The consultant advises school-based staff and students in all technical aspects of theater, stage, auditorium productions, special events, and community group productions including lighting and sound systems, rigging, and audio-visual and computerized support. The consultant reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of, the Instructional Specialist for the Arts, or other higher-level staff member. Does related work as needed. This is an independent contractor position.
Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or New York State registered college or university to grant degrees with an Associate's degree in Theater Arts Management, Theatrical Production Arts, Theater Arts, Music Recording Technology, Musical Theater, Musical Theater Operations, Stage Production or closely related field; or
B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of full-time work experience or its part-time equivalent in either: theater operations, theatrical productions, operation of lighting and/or sound systems in a theater environment, or installation or maintenance work with audio visual and theater sound and lighting systems, and experience in stage production or coordination of school/theater/auditorium and/or community events; or
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience comparable to the above.
Additional Qualifications:
  • Experience in and good knowledge of theater technology specifically as it relates to lighting, sound systems, rigging, audio-visual and computerized systems;
  • experience in and good knowledge of the appropriate technical support personnel needed to operate and run a theater, production or event;
  • ability to work independently and apply problem-solving skills;
  • ability to manage multiple concurrent projects;
  • ability to make decisions;
  • ability to prepare written documents, reports and manuals;
  • ability to establish effective working relationships with others;
  • ability to direct the technical aspects of all types of productions;

  • ability to train others in the use of technical equipment and other technical aspects of theatrical productions and special events;

  • physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Develops and maintains knowledge base of installed systems;
  • Maintains audio/visual equipment inventory for each auditorium;
  • Develops manuals for each auditorium outlining procedural operations of facilities and equipment;
  • Schedules preventative maintenance and required inspections of technical equipment, and maintains related records;
  • Provides introductory and ongoing training for staff, students and other parties in the use of technical equipment and other aspects of productions;
  • Assists with the selection and development of stage crews as needed;
  • Advises on and reviews technical aspects of proposed stage sets, and lighting and sound production design for all middle and high school productions;
  • Provides professional technical information to students of Art, Music, Theater, Technology, English and other subjects, in the form of oral presentations.
Anticipated Hours:
Up to 144 hours per high school site (three high schools) per year and up to 64 hours per middle school site (four middle schools) per year, hours only as needed. Specific hours to be arranged with each site and subject to the approval of the Instructional Specialist for Fine & Performing Arts. Hours may vary. Additional hours may be allocated at the start of the contract to establish materials and procedures.
Start Date: Approx. 6/1/21
Reports to: Instructional Specialist for Fine & Performing Arts
Salary: $25.00/hour
