Lake Forest High School District 115 is seeking a Certified School Nurse.

Description: The Certified School Nurse will coordinate a school health program including the delivery of services to students and staff members in order to enhance health and wellness in the school community. Duties are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school nurse practice, district/state board of education policies and procedures and Illinois State law regarding nurse practice.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education, Experience, and Licensure:
  • Professional Educator License with School Nurse certificationCurrent Registered Nurse licensure in State of IllinoisCurrent First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation program completion (preferably a certified instructor)Prior professional nursing experience, preferably pediatric, adolescent, community or mental health nursing, and health program managementIllinois Certification as a Vision and Hearing screening technicianKnowledge of Illinois policy related to student health records (ie. Immunization), Health Insurance, Portability, & Accountability Act (HIPAA) & Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)Highly experienced in working collaboratively with students, faculty, parents and administrators in the school settingAbility to recognize a potential crisis situation and to intervene in a professional mannerAbility to function in a professional manner (independently and calmly) at all timesHighly experienced health assessment and counseling skills

  • Effective communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills for problem-solving, promoting initiatives and conveying expectationsExperience in analyzing data to plan for intervention and instructional methodsDemonstrates ability to function as a positive collaborative member of a team to facilitate problem solvingProficient use of Microsoft Office suite, Google Apps for Education and school-based processing and management systemsDemonstrates interest and engagement in ongoing professional learning and reflectionDemonstrates the ability to communicate in a professional manner both orally and in writingDemonstrates strength in planning, organization, communication in scheduling and efficiently meeting deadlinesDemonstrates a commitment to excellence, high expectations and to the academic and personal well-being of all studentsMaintains confidentialityAdhere to Board of Education policies and procedures

Essential Functions:
  • Share the District's core beliefs around inclusive practices and promote inclusive practices for students with disabilities when appropriateDevelops and administers a coordinated school health programAssesses the health and safety needs of the school environment in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, implementing the Bloodborne Pathogen Control Plan and other interventions as indicatedCooperates with local and state public health agencies related to established communicable disease prevention and control programsManages school health records in accordance with Illinois School Student Records Act, providing efficient retrieval of information and other related archival responsibilitiesParticipates in Child Find programs and establishes and manages health screening programs according to state mandates and guidelinesParticipates in the development of health-related policies and procedures in compliance with state mandates and current health practicesAttends Core Team meetings, 504 meetings, IEP meetings, and other meetings as requested by the Director of Educational Services or the Director of Special EducationProvides and/or delegates direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students and staff including nursing assessment, identifying health problems, making referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommending educational modifications, providing follow-up and evaluation, and maintaining appropriate documentationProvides health and wellness information, counseling and training for students, parents, and staffDevelops a medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at schoolSupervises and/or provides screening and follow up for deficits in vision, hearing, growth and development, and other physical deficitsMaintains accurate medical records to assure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditionsParticipates as a crisis team member and provides crisis intervention for students and staff in the the event of a sudden illness or injuryMakes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporterProvides staff in-service programs on health topics including blood borne pathogens and the district exposure control planProvides health related classroom instructionMaintains a user friendly and organized health center conducive to confidential communication and servicesResponsible for health center and OSHA supplies and equipment purchasing and maintenanceManages and makes recommendations for the health center annual budget and critical needs requestsProvides day to day guidance to the staff in the nurse's office under the direction of the Director of Educational ServicesMaintains communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the health and safety needs of studentsInitiates contact with and acts as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school communityMaintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issuesParticipates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification, evaluation, reevaluation, and placement of students into special education programs.Writes the health component of the Individual Education Plan as indicatedRecommends modifications of the school program for students who require accommodations due to a health deficitDevelops and maintains current health care plans for students who need special nursing interventions during the school dayAware of current issues and information concerning professional school nursing and education organizations and utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge in both nursing and education fieldsParticipates as a member of the faculty on district committeesParticipates as an active member of the school community, representing health/wellnessIf qualified, teach First Aid/CPR classes to certify administrators, faculty, and staffPerforms other job related duties as assigned by direct supervisor
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, drive, and reach. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, and lift. Repetitive motions are required. The employee must lift, transfer, and/or move students of various weights following LFHS guidelines. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly subject to inside environmental conditions and is subject to noises associated with both office and educational environments.
