This position is 6.5hrs per day, 9 months per year. BASIC FUNCTION: The purpose of this position is to provide support across the continuum of Special Education service and programs between PK-12. Responsibilities may include supporting individual student or classroom up to a period of six weeks at a time. This position will be supported and deployed by the behavior coordinator and/or an assistant director from the Inclusive Education team. This position may require staff to provide individual student support as determined by district-level administrative staff.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Implement and model instructional/behavioral programs planned by teachers or support staff, including positive behavior support plans, visual supports, environmental supports, and assistive technology as appropriate. E

Collect and record student data/observations on student performance. E

Collaborate with classroom teacher and support staff to train other classroom staff as appropriate. E

Provide/assist with one/two-person lifts or transfers for lifting/transferring students that are not independent.

Collaborate with the teacher to adapt classroom assignments so that the student may participate in classroom activities as fully as possible.

Assist staff with student's positive behavior reinforcement systems, positive reinforcement charts, daily schedules, and routines. E

Knowledge and ability to implement de-escalation and crisis intervention behavioral techniques, including escorts and/or holds as appropriate. E

Monitors group during interactions times, observes students, and maintains an awareness of individual student emotional and physical needs; reports situations as appropriate to classroom teachers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • AA degree, 72 quarter-hour college credits, OR ParaPro Assessment with a score of 461 or higher. (Transcripts or proof of ParaPro score must on file to be considered for an interview.)
  • Proof of High School completion. Copy of diploma or transcripts must be on file at start of employment.
  • College transcripts that specifically state completion of high school will be accepted in lieu of high school diploma.
  • Physically strong enough to assist with restraint, lifting, and transferring students to a safe place.
  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment, including handling of confidential matters.
  • Ability to facilitate conflict resolution.
  • Ability to organize ideas, time and materials to accomplish goals.
  • Enthusiasm
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and understand concepts being discussed.
  • Ability to learn new ideas and skills; ability and willingness to develop favorable relationships with students.
  • Willingness to model behavior deemed appropriate by the school district and the community.
  • All Paraeducator applicants are required to show proof of 72 college level credits, an AA degree (or higher), or passed the Para Professional Assessment. If an applicant is in need of testing, they can still apply, and if they are the finalist candidate they will need to pass the Para Professional before being hired into the role.
    Upon hire, new paraeducators will be required to complete state required training offered through our KSD Professional Development Team.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working with high needs students across levels. Must not be afraid of students with complex behavioral manifestation/presentation.
  • Right Response Training/Crisis Prevention Intervention Training recommended.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students who are in an at-risk situation.
  • Ability to communicate in another language.
  • Ability to exhibit multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity with the ability to communicate effectively with all cultural groups in the school community.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population and the specific school demographics.
  • Ability to be dependable, including good habits in attendance and punctuality.
  • Must have strong communication skills.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills working with a team of adults.
  • Must develop healthy, respectful, and positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Must be able to take initiative to do what needs to be done without being told.
  • Must be enthusiastic, positive and be a team member and able to demonstrate flexibility working with students, parents, and staff.
  • Must maintain positive learning environment and have ability to relate to all students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Employment eligibility may include fingerprints, health (TB), and/or other employment clearance.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • District organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Educational and business technology programs, procedures and methods, computer equipment, and computer software necessary to perform required duties.
  • Oral and written communication skills, including English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, composition, and skills in mathematics.

Ability to:

  • Ability to work independently, and to independently learn operations, procedures, processes, and use of equipment, especially computers.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Environment:
The daily instructional activities are performed in a classroom setting or in a pullout model for small groups of students. There is frequent interaction with students. Materials and equipment are frequently transported to various locations during the workday. The paraeducator works with at-risk students of various academic and social deficits, which may include anti-social behaviors. A high level of records management, record-keeping, and reporting exists. The employee may be exposed to infectious diseases. Regular attendance at job site is required.

Physical demands:

  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching, and reaching to retrieve and maintain files and records.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment, computer keyboard, and other equipment necessary to complete the required duties.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone.
  • Visual ability to read, and to prepare/process documents and to monitor various services and personnel.
  • Sitting for extended periods.
  • Standing for extended periods.
  • Walking over rough or uneven surfaces.
  • Climbing, occasional use of stepladders.
  • Physical activity may be required, which could include moderate lifting.
