Job Summary
The Intervention Coach supports and educates students with severe behavioral issues. The coach provides a high level of security to maintain a safe learning environment for students and staff. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A high school diploma or equivalent.A minimum of one year of experience in working with students with behavior issues.Must successfully complete Mandt training levels one and two and demonstrate appropriate use of Mandt techniques within 30 days of hire.Must possess a current Alaska driver's license.Must maintain Mandt certification and successfully pass periodic Mandt evaluations.Must maintain current CPR/first aid certification.

The following are preferred:
  1. A bachelor's degree in a mental health field.Two years of experience in working with students with behavior issues.Experience delivering behavioral support services to individuals with special needs, especially students with behavior issues.Understanding of mental health issues as they relate to the unique needs of students.Experience using developmentally appropriate therapeutic interventions and/or behavioral supports with students with emotional and/or behavioral issues.Experience working collaboratively with or delegating duties to other professionals.Experience in report writing and data collection.Ability to work with children and adolescents with serious emotional disturbances.Ability to work independently, yet take direction well.Ability to assimilate and apply new knowledge quickly and accurately.Ability to be self-directed, flexible, and creative.Ability to take a leadership role in situations that require physical management or restraint.Ability to restrain young adults and children.Ability to self-evaluate to assure that personal behavior is supporting students in crisis.Ability to use positive behavioral supports in handling emotional and/or behavioral crisis situations in a school setting.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Acts as lead staff member in situations that require de-escalation and restraint techniques.Manages the correct use of the isolation rooms and related therapeutic areas.Solves problems with the school staff to improve services for students.Responds to crises efficiently and effectively to reduce physical and emotional injury to staff and students and damage of property.Attends all assigned Anchorage School District training in behavioral supports and therapeutic interventions.Implements special education programming for students as specified in Individual Education Plans under the supervision of a certified special education professional.Maintains appropriate progress data for each student as specified in the IEP and provides quarterly progress reports.Participates in development and implementation of Behavior Support Plans for students as specified in the IEP.Provides instructional support with direction from the teacher.Establishes and maintains good working relationships with other professionals such as regular educators, special educators, related services personnel, and teacher assistants, as well as other school staff members.Uses appropriate techniques and strategies to establish a supportive, therapeutic learning environment for students.Works with and supports students with emotional issues and/or demonstrating extreme behavior problems. Understands and maintains confidentiality issues for IDEA and FERPA.Maintains level of support and leads staff and students when processing through crisis situations.

Physical/Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
