The Mission Preparatory School, a TK-8, college-preparatory, tuition-free, public charter school in San Francisco’s Mission District, is accepting applications for the role of Dean of Culture & Instruction for the 2021-22 school year.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Dean of Culture and Instruction creates and maintains a safe, supportive and sustaining school community and an environment for learning in which all students, faculty and their families feel welcome. Leading in equity, the Dean Role is held by those who believe deeply in the potential for every student to succeed, and work tirelessly each day to create an anti-racist school environment that is built around high expectations, an inclusive and welcoming culture, and an expectation of excellence for all. Reporting to the Executive Director, our Deans develop and implement Mission Preparatory’s vision that honors and acknowledges the assets, fund of knowledge and cultural wealth of students and families. This role maintains a clear focus on achieving sustainable success for every student, every minute, & every day by providing access to equitable opportunities, and building a sustainable inclusive and culturally responsive school culture and environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

Instruction

  • Is a member of the Instructional Leadership Team for Content Area/ Grade level

  • Coordinates and supervises the Instructional Staff for Grade level Team at Mission Preparatory School, including coaching and supporting the development of all teachers

  • Supports all aspects of Mission Preparatory School's instructional and curriculum integration (PD, coaching, course maps, etc.), ensuring a focus on Mission Preparatory School's instructional core, mission and vision.

  • Coordinate the development, implementation and revision of Mission Preparatory School's internal assessments and benchmarks for content area & Grade Level

  • Responsible for initiating and collaborating with the Executive Director and other Instructional leaders team to complete the School Instructional Calendar and PD Days

  • Responsible for programs supporting English Learners, including curriculum, instruction, assessment, and monitoring.

  • Keeps current with educational developments and literature in the field of education and participates in the affairs of state and national professional organizations devoted to the advancement of curriculum and instruction

  • Monitors grades and makes intervention recommendations for students

  • Reviews of teacher referrals for additional tiered supports of students

Academic Culture

  • Inspires students, families, and staff to achieve the mission of Mission Preparatory School by creating an engaging and rigorous academic culture

  • With a team, cultivates an anti-racist culture of high expectations for all students and staff

  • Collaborates with staff to develop and implement school wide academic initiatives

  • Co-leads the planning and logistics of all academic events such as Exhibition Nights, Restorative Justice Night, Literacy Night, STEAM Night, & Social Justice

  • Develops, implements, and maintains College-Going Culture Planning/Initiatives

  • Maintains a daily presence throughout the school in Grade level classes and community meetings

  • Collaborates with Dean of Student Support Services to monitor and support teachers around RTI intervention structures and programs Teacher Coaching and Evaluation

  • Contributes to the development, implementation and revision of Mission Preparatory School's Teacher Evaluation Program.

  • Coaches and evaluates teachers in assigned content areas or grade level, including:

    • Modeling lessons and instructional strategies for teachers

    • Helping teachers to effectively use classroom and schoolwide data to ensure learning is happening in all classrooms

    • Building trust with teachers and using strong interpersonal skills

    • Conducting effective observations and evaluations including giving direct and difficult feedback to support growth of teacher practice when needed

    • Developing accurate learning targets,

    • Scaffolding instruction towards learning targets,

    • Differentiating curriculum and instruction to support emerging skill sets of all students, including ELL and IEP students.

    • Developing and refining curriculum and performance assessments.

    • Developing an adult culture of accountability (using accountability of crew), direct feedback, and improvement

Assessment

  • Demonstrates data driven practices and a growth mindset including: being results-oriented, supporting the internal benchmark testing process, organizing the analysis of results, moving teachers’ practice in order to increase student achievement, consistently tracking and monitoring student progress in order to assess effectiveness of intended objective

  • Supports the administration of all site, state, and local testing (ELPAC, SBAC, MAP (NWEA), & any BOY, MOY, EOY site assessment)

  • Co-develops the materials to prepare students for testing

  • Leads, coordinates, and implements the logistics & training required to ensure adherence to testing protocols

Curriculum Development

  • Holds the short and long-term vision for culturally relevant and rigorous curriculum, ensuring a focus on Mission Preparatory School's mission and vision for Prepsters in assigned grade span

  • Acts as Department Lead & expert for Content Area/ Grade Level

  • Coordinates all benchmark, finals and standardized testing for grade level assigned/ content area, including data analysis protocols and re-teaching plans.

Culture & Community Builder

  • Fosters a Collaborative Culture by Demonstrating an ethic of care.

  • Creates and sustains a school culture of “we” vs. “I”, with partnership and collaboration for all of the adults across the building, including teachers, leadership partners, operation staff, teaching assistants, custodial staff, families and all stakeholders.

  • Values and harnesses the strengths of families through a demonstrated commitment to frequent, meaningful and authentic family partnership and engagement opportunities.

  • Creates a psychologically safe space for all students, families and staff, where they feel consistently heard, seen, valued and respected.

  • Proactively seeks out and leverages local partners, leaders and community organizations to complement teacher expertise, inform school improvement, and provide additional resources and learning opportunities for students and teachers (such as Breakthrough, etc). Ensure partnerships are culturally competent and target supports for students who are carrying the greatest burden of inequities.

  • Models the principles of culturally responsive social and emotional learning through daily interactions with staff and students; coaches staff to do the same to provide students with the social and emotional support they need.

  • Creates and supports the development of inclusive efforts to celebrate student culture and diversity.

Professional Development

  • Collaborates to develop PD scope and sequence for Grade Level with Executive Director, and other instructional leadership leaders

  • Holds the vision for grade level professional development activities and content specific professional development

  • Facilitates weekly professional development to grade level team

  • Leads whole school PD in areas of expertise.

  • Represents the school in meetings and conferences related to curriculum, instruction and assessment matters as directed by Executive Director Administrative Duties

  • Participates as key member of administrative team in meetings (in & out of school)

  • Participates in student conferences, student intervention meetings, serve as LEA in 504, IEP meetings

  • Completes reports, grants writing, and presentation of department data for stakeholders as requested

  • Fulfills other assignments as needed to best serve our students

  • Supports the Executive Director to recruit, hire, and retain a high-quality staff

Qualifications: Required

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Urban teaching experience; 1-4 years of urban school leadership experience with proven results and success

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

Preferred

  • Master’s degree

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

  • CA teaching credential; CLAD/BCLAD certification

  • Administrative credential

Start Date: July 12th, 2021

Time Commitment:

This position is 1.0 FTE (full-time exempt) and follows a 12-month work year with significant student-free days for holidays/breaks, as well as professional learning and collaboration with colleagues and interaction with families.

Salary and Compensation:

Salary scales are based on years of experience and expertise. Scales are competitive with other charter school organizations and local districts.
