SUMMARY

Under general supervision, coordinates work and disability accommodation services for employees; reviews medical, psychological and technical evaluations of employee disabilities and requests reasonable accommodations in compliance with MPS policies, and state and Federal laws.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Reviews disability documentation of functional limitations to determine eligibility for services and to substantiate requests for reasonable accommodations.

• Coordinates and manages communications between supervisor, staff and Worker's Compensation/Leave Coordinator and provides ongoing consultation to all involved parties.

• Assists employees in their understanding of their disabilities/limitations; their rights to reasonable accommodations; explains MPS policies and procedures.

• Documents, maintains, and reviews current case records, notes and related information in electronic and manual files.

• Delivers formal training to, and provides technical consultations to, supervisors, employees, and leadership to promote awareness and knowledge of disability issues and policies.

• Coordinates with Office of Equity and Diversity on complaints alleging discrimination and noncompliance under Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other applicable federal and state laws regarding discrimination on the basis of disability.

• Maintains current knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations as well as the best practices of other organizations.

• Exercises independent judgment within policy guidelines.

• Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment

• Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent's goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.

• Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Psychology or related field

AND

2 years of experience working with accommodation and/or worker's compensation casework or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

Knowledge of :

• Principles and practices of medical, psychological and technical evaluations of disabilities.

• MPS policies, programs, and collective bargaining agreement provisions related to accommodations and disability services.

• Federal, state, and local laws regarding access for employees with work limitations and disabilities.

• Basic data sampling and statistical analysis techniques.

• Project management and analytical techniques.

Skill in :

• Developing and delivering specialized professional consultations and training on disability issues.

• Working with supervisors, employees, health care providers and other parties involved in disability determinations.

• Analyzing requests for accommodations and developing and implementing plans for the provision of reasonable accommodations.

• Interpreting, applying and explaining applicable laws, codes and regulations.

• Compiling and summarizing information and preparing periodic or special reports.

• Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.

• Organizing own work, setting priorities, and meeting critical deadlines.

• Maintaining accurate records and files.

• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, community leaders, government agency representatives, and the public.

• Operating IT systems and specialized software.

• Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Valid Minnesota State Driver's License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.

MACA 55 Exempt

Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
