    Position Title: Instructional Technology/Professional Development Specialist
    Department: Instruction
    Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction
    FLSA Status: Exempt
    Days of Work: 230

    GENERAL SUMMARY

    Under occasional supervision, participates in the development and implementation of curricular standards to encourage appropriate use of technology in District instruction; assists K-12 educators in developing lesson plans and activities involving the use of technology, and performs related professional, administrative and technical work as required.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    Provides assistance and leadership in planning the integration of curriculum-based technology in District instructional programs for K-12 teachers and students.
    Shares resources for technology integration with faculty.
    Works with educators to develop lesson plans and activities involving the use of technology to meet educational goals; locates digital resources for units of study; demonstrates / models effective technology teaching; meets with individual teachers and small faculty groups to discuss curriculum, suggest ways to use technology in the delivery of curriculum, and to support teachers as they actively use technology in their classrooms.
    Plans, coordinates, schedules and teaches school-level and District-wide instructional technology workshops, in-service training, staff development sessions and other opportunities to assist with technology integration.
    Researches and consults on technology resources, emerging technologies, and media resources; reports recommendations as requested.
    Assists in evaluating and selecting equipment, software, hardware, instructional programs, digital cameras, interactive whiteboards, classroom performance systems and other technologies.
    Coordinates and maintains an updated collection of technology materials, resources and equipment to meet the identified needs of District schools.
    Develops instructional strategies using instructional technology across all content areas.
    Selects and/or prepares technology materials related to educational programs; creates instructional handouts and materials.
    Assists in planning, coordinating, scheduling and implementing technology-oriented graduate and re- certification courses for K-12 teachers, media specialists and administrators.
    Provides professional user support and assistance as needed by teachers and staff; performs simple maintenance and troubleshooting procedures on equipment.
    Assists teachers in researching grant funds to support selected technology projects and programs.
    Works cooperatively with state technology specialists and consultants to keep fully informed of current technology developments in K-12 education.
    Serves as a contact person for vendors of instructional technology products and services.
    Prepares and/or processes administrative reports, monthly newsletter, presentation materials, curriculum / tutorial materials, and various other records, reports, memos, correspondence.
    Operates a variety of equipment such as computers, printers, network equipment, modems, peripherals, audio-visual equipment, copier, calculator, telephone, word processor, etc.; uses clerical, copier, computer supplies, and small hand tools.
    Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, Superintendent, other District administrators and staff, school administrators and staff, State Department of Education personnel, various committees, government agencies, vendors / service providers, and the general public.
    Attends training, seminars and conferences, etc., as necessary to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.
    Consults with administrators, teachers, and other division employees to determine current and anticipated professional development needs.
    Establishes learning objectives and goals for staff development sessions and develops training outlines and timelines.
    Determines the most appropriate instructional method, utilizing knowledge of specified training needs and applicability and effectiveness of such methods as individual coaching, large and small group instruction, lectures, interactive training, and transfer techniques.
    Selects or develops appropriate training materials such as handouts, training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, and reference works.
    Markets, and encourages participation in, upcoming staff development initiatives and activities.
    Schedules training sessions, develops registration procedures, ensures that the facility is setup, ensures that employees are notified, and coordinates other practical elements involved with planning professional development activities.
    Designs and presents staff development sessions to different employee groups covering specific areas such as leadership development, instructional best practices, and school improvement initiatives.
    Coaches and supports employees with developing their skills and improving job performance.
    Assesses the success of each training session, studies follow-up evaluations, prepares related reports, and recommends improvements.
    Assists with advising employees on re-licensure guidelines and arranges, through human resources, for re-licensure points for those employees attending professional development activities.
    Serves as a resource to the Curriculum and Instruction department and schools and advises/supports Instructional Supervisors and Principals with developing in-service programs.
    Assists with the leadership and coordination of the district strategic plan from the state.
    Serves as a resource to teachers, administrators, and other staff to identify and access professional literature, training materials, and training opportunities.
    Informs and advises employees about the division's tuition reimbursement program and other professional development benefits.
    Oversees the maintenance of a database containing records of professional development initiatives.
    Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

    JOB SPECIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience:
    Requires a Master's degree in education or related field supplemented by three to four years of experience in educational technology services, professional development, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A valid S.C. administrative certificate is required. Must possess a valid state driver's license.
    Knowledge and Skills:
    Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the District as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Instructional Technology/Professional Development Specialist. Has considerable knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of the District and other governmental agencies. Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position; has knowledge of state and District mandates pertaining to computerized systems. Has considerable knowledge in the areas of instructional technology and related curriculum development, technology training, program management, etc. Is able to provide leadership in planning, developing and implementing the integration of modern technology for District-wide instruction. Is able to plan, schedule and present effective training and professional development activities for faculty and staff. Is able to help plan, implement and support the utilization of various technologies in school classrooms, media centers and District / school offices. Is able to provide professional, efficient user support and assistance. Is able to research and determine appropriate hardware, software and network requirements for instructional use. Has knowledge of the standard tools, materials and practices of the industry. Has skill in the care and use of required tools and equipment. Has knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry. Is able to make sound, educated decisions. Is able to effectively coordinate the work of various District and school-level staff in the planning and presentation of instructional technology training and support.
    Has the ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Has the ability to plan and develop daily, short- and long-term goals related to District purposes. Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Has good organizational, technical and human relations skills. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Has knowledge of proper English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Has knowledge of modern office practices and technology. Has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations.     Working Conditions:

    Conducts duties in an office environment with no significant exposure to environmental conditions. Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that required constant attention, and meeting deadlines. Physical demands are restricted to office work requiring the lifting/moving of items weighing up to 25 pounds. Routine local travel is required; no overnight travel is required. Nature of job requires frequent use of computer and monitor for long durations.

    TERM OF EMPLOYMENT :

    The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during an entire school year. Conditions of employment are adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

    EVALUATION:
    Performance of this job will be evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
