Job Title: Library Media Specialist/Teacher Librarian

Primary Purpose:

The library media specialist/teacher-librarian designs and executes a comprehensive school

library program that is aligned with the school and district strategic plans as well as state and

national school library and technology standards. (CCCS, AASL, ISTE, Digital Citizenship) As the library program administrator, the school librarian works collaboratively with members of the learning community to define the policies and best practices of the school library program, and to guide and direct all activities related to it.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification/Bonding and/or Testing Required:
  • Experience Preferred: Prior job-related experience .Bachelor's Degree. Media Specialist endorsement required.Appropriate Teacher Standards and Practices Commission license, Criminal Justice fingerprint clearance, and valid driver's license and evidence of insurability.Oregon Fingerprinting and Criminal Background Check clearance.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Information & Technology Specialist/Manager
  • Operates and manages the Library Media Center and Textbook Room.Prepares and administers the Library Media Center budget.Proficient in the management of staff, budgets, equipment, and facilities, the library media specialist plans, executes, and evaluates the program to ensure its quality both at a general level and on a day-to-day basis.Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all print and non-print materials for areas included with the assignment (i.e. the library, the faculty library, the textbook room, and the career center).Maintains an efficient system for circulation, retrieval and storage of both hardware and software not under the responsibility of the technology assistant or district technology personnel.Trains and supervises all Library Media Center staff and volunteers in the performance of their duties.Weeds obsolete and worn materials from the collection.Maintains accurate records of the Library Media Center's holdings and determines statistics as needed.Masters sophisticated electronic resources and maintains a constant focus on the nature, quality, and ethical use of information available in these and in more traditional tools.Provides leadership and expertise in acquiring and evaluating information resources in all formats; in bringing an awareness of information issues into collaborative relationships with teachers, administrators, students, and others; and in modeling for students and others strategies for locating, accessing, and evaluating information within and beyond the library media center.Establishes policies and procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, resource sharing, and weeding of the materials collection (both print and digital) to ensure that it is culturally relevant, up to date, in excellent condition, and accessible to the school community.Plans, manages and administers testing/assessment in collaboration with the school principal and district test coordinator.

Teacher
  • Promotes and instructs students in digital citizenship.Provides group and individual instruction to students in the use of Library Media Center and its resources on an as needed basis or as part of planned curricular assignments.Promotes reading and literature appreciation through activities such as book talks, story-telling, displays and special events such as school-wide events, book fairs, clubs, Oregon Battle of the Books etc.Creates and maintains the school library as a teaching and learning environment that is inviting, safe, flexible, accessible, and conducive to student learning.Encourages the integration of research skills throughout school's instructional programs through such things as collaboration with teachers, media center web page, in-service training etc.Collaborates with students and other members of the learning community to analyze learning and information needs, to locate and use resources that will meet those needs, and to understand and communicate the information the resources provide.Is knowledgeable about current research on teaching and learning and skilled in applying its findings to a variety of situations__particularly those that call upon students to access, evaluate, and use information from multiple sources in order to learn, to think, and to create and apply new knowledge.Constantly updates personal skills and knowledge in order to work effectively with teachers, administrators, and other staff__both to expand their general understanding of information issues and to provide them with specific opportunities to develop sophisticated skills in information literacy, including the uses of information technology.


Media & Instructional Consultant/Partner
  • Provides staff development for teachers in the use and resources of the media center such as its electronic and network database information resources, copyright guidelines, and integration of media into the curriculum.Supports, promotes and maintains the use of the professional collection.Joins with teachers and others to integrate library services and multi-media materials with the instructional program, and identify links across student information needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and a wide variety of print, non-print, and electronic information resources.Works closely with individual teachers in the critical areas of designing authentic learning tasks and assessments and integrating the information and communication abilities required to meet subject matter standards.
