QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Eligible for a Connecticut state teaching certification in special education (065, 165, 265);
  • Candidate should be eligible for certification in the area for which a job opening exists.
  • Consideration will be given to the following:
  • references that indicate the candidate exhibits exceptional teaching talent;
  • college and/or graduate school grades;
  • various life/work experiences that contribute to the candidates overall sophistication.
  • Previous experience working with students with emotional needs.


  • SALARY: $49,020 - $104,599 depending upon education and experience

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
    To instruct and help students learn subject matter and/or skills that will contribute toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, social and psychological growth. The teacher is also responsible for establishing rapport with students, parents and other staff members.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

    Planning and Preparation

    1.Establish appropriate lesson goals and objectives
    2.Establish/implement a routine for daily lesson planning and assessment
    3.Prepare materials and technology for lessons

    Implementing Instruction

    1.Create and maintain a learning environment in which students are actively engaged
    2.Provide academic instruction in functional reading, writing, and math skills while taking into account individual student differences
    3.Model skills, provide assisted practice, reinforcement, and re-direction in classroom and vocational settings
    4.Provide community and social instruction in the natural environment.
    5.Interface with regular education teachers to look for opportunities for students to participate in regular education course offerings.

    Communicating and Interacting with Students

    1.Model expectations for appropriate young adult interactions and provide feedback to foster student growth
    2.Demonstrate consistency and fairness with students
    3.Guide students in developing positive attitudes toward themselves, others, work and leisure
    4.Demonstrate an understanding of student's social/emotional difficulties when interacting and planning.

    Instructional Skills

    1.Demonstrate knowledge and application of subject matter
    2.Encourage students to think critically and make good decisions
    3.Teach students positive work habits that lead to independence
    4.Provide instruction directly related to daily living situations
    5.Use a variety of resources and media in daily instruction
    6.Provide instruction that encourages students to reach for goals consistent with their abilities and to participate meaningfully in class groups
    7.Fade prompting as students acquire skills
    8.Demonstrate understanding of FBA's and BIPs when planning instruction.

    Assessment of Students

    1.Collect, analyze and report data related to student performance in the classroom.
    2.Maintain ongoing awareness of students' progress and adjust instruction accordingly
    3.Assist students in self-evaluation of their individual growth and development in accordance with their abilities
    4.Maintain appropriate student records and submit requested reports within designated time frames
    5.Fade supports as students increase skill and performance level in the classroom, on job sites, and in community settings
    6.Maintain data on student's BIP's to assure that students are working on appropriate behavioral goals.

    Teacher-Parent Relationships

    1.Maintain communications with parents regarding students' performance and needs
