Educational Sign Language Interpreter I
FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
The primary function of the Educational Interpreter is to act as a facilitator of communication between the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) student and the educational setting (staff, peers, environment).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provides sign language interpretation as documented in the DHH student's IEP
• Interprets communication within the immediate environment, including instruction, announcements, conversations, and environmental noises to the DHH student
• Interprets the DHH student's communication to non-signers
• Ensures that the student has full access to instruction as well as academic and social exchanges in the educational setting
• Interprets within the classroom, on field trips, in specials, and other locations within the educational setting
• Carries out pre-teaching, review, drill and practice, and checking for understanding as directed by the classroom teacher or DHH itinerant teacher
• Works in coordination with regular education teacher and the DHH teacher to convey pertinent information about the student's level of understanding and academic/social performance
• Provides for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work
• Earns 30 hours of continuing education credits annually in the area of sign language interpreting or related area
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Skilled in American Sign Language and Signed English.
• Skilled in interpreting both voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice
• Knowledge of Deaf culture
• Ability to simplify language as necessary to match the student's language level
• Ability to address grade level curriculum at the student's language level
• Ability to foster and monitor language and vocabulary development
• Ability to identify and address self-advocacy goals
• Ability to facilitate increasing independence for the student within the educational setting.
• Ability to document student performance regarding language development, self-advocacy skills, level of independence within the educational setting
• Familiarity with listening technology
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS

• Score of 3.0 or higher on the Educational Interpreting Proficiency Assessment (EIPA) or Licensure from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID)
• High School Diploma
