Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy opened in 1998 with a mission to prepare students to succeed in competitive colleges and to empower them to use public policy to create a more just, free, and equal world.

Now, over 20 years later, Chavez provides a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, a unique public policy program, and a safe and supportive learning environment with comprehensive support services. Located in the Parkside community in Northeast D.C., Chavez will serve 400 middle and high school students for the 2021-22 school year.

POSITION SUMMARY
Leading Chavez High School, you will drive the school's vision, mission and academic program to excellence advancing students' post-secondary dreams, aspirations, and possibilities with a growth mindset. You will lead a high school program determined to close opportunity gaps for all students. As the school's most senior academic and school culture leader, the Principal is responsible for managing all policies and programming that ensure a learning environment consistent with the college preparatory and public policy-infused curricula mission of Chavez Schools. The Principal collaborates and cooperates with key personnel, leveraging subject- matter expertise to maximize the effectiveness of school programming.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Establish and lead the academic vision and expectations for excellence, guide the curriculum and instructional vision, build instructional capacity, oversee professional development and evaluation, implement curricula with fidelity and rigor, and monitor and ensure student growth, learning, and achievement.
  • Serve as the instructional leader, champion and expert for a team of committed teachers, students, and support staff working in unison to fulfill the vision and mission of Chavez High School including responsibility for assessment, instruction, curriculum and professional development.
  • Advocate for students, promote an inclusive community, emphasize family involvement, and create a culture of excellence and opportunity for students pursuing their hopes, aspirations, and possibilities.
  • Ensure that all students at Chavez High School excel in their future destiny through the supervision of the student support and college programming teams.
  • Lead the school's program to achieve its mission ensuring all students have access and opportunities in their post-secondary pursuits and develop and lead a robust dual-enrollment program for students with the college team.
  • Achieve accountability and programmatic goals with a robust team of educators and students. Effectively use, manage, and analyze data to manage towards performance outcomes. Ensure performance accountability metrics are met, and that student outcomes continue to improve aligning the school's vision to student success.
  • Evaluate assigned personnel for the purpose of ensuring the vision, mission and performance goals are met annually for the school and student body.
  • Oversee a strong and positive student and staff culture, managing the team while setting the expectation for excellence from the top.
  • Implement policies, procedures, and process for the purpose of providing direction and/or complying with school, local, state, and federal regulations, guidelines and policies.
  • Model for staff and students a growth mindset, ensure quality professional learning, a supportive learning community, and create an environment where staff and students are successful.
  • Collaborate with the middle school principal and staff to ensure alignment between the middle and high school programs.
  • Ensure student enrollment goals are met, and that recruitment plans are implemented effectively.
  • Ensure that the school meets all reporting and accountability requirements as defined by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) as well as the DC Public Charter School Board's Performance Management Framework.
  • Ensure that financial management, facilities and operations, and human resources are effectively managed and overseen, with support from our school improvement partner and home office support.
  • Serve as the primary external champion and spokesperson for the high school representing and advocating for the school within the community.
  • Partner with the Head of Schools to continue to build the school into a premier, single campus secondary institution in Ward 7.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED
  • Bachelor's degree required. An advanced degree in K-12 school administration, curriculum & instruction, or a related field with strong academic preparation is preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years of leadership with proven results in an urban school setting that demonstrates student instructional outcomes and evidence of closing opportunity gaps for students in secondary schools;
  • Minimum of 3 years demonstrated success as an effective high school classroom teacher as evidenced by teacher and scholar growth and achievement data as well as personal performance data;
  • A performance- and outcome-driven approach with a demonstrated track record of impact on student outcomes, with strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytic skills;
  • Strong communication and listening skills, with a track record in team-building, change management, and building alignment around a shared vision and direction;
  • A high degree of personal integrity, demonstrated leadership abilities, and a history of working cooperatively with key stakeholders in a school environment;
  • Solid understanding of the developmental and social nuances of children in grades 6-12;
  • Develops and supports a climate that values, accepts, and understands that achievement is at the core of our work, and that excuses are irrelevant;
  • Demonstrated commitment to educational equity for all students;
  • Works independently with little direct supervision and as part of a team;
  • Experience managing budgets and organizational operations preferred;
  • Citizenship, residency of work VISA in the United States required.

In accordance with Mayor's Order 2021-109, Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy requires all staff to provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or obtain an approval for exemption due to medical or religious reasons by November 1, 2021.

ADA SPECIFICATIONS: This position will be based at Chavez in the Parkside neighborhood. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move about the building. In addition, travel to other sites could be required, frequency to depend on the needs of the school and position. The employee is regularly required to speak audibly, see, listen actively, and use hands to handle objects while performing the duties of this job. This position requires the ability to use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and filing cabinets.
