AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE AND INTERPRETER FACILITATOR

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of the Special Education Programming Director and/or Special Education Administrator, the American Sign Language and Interpreter Facilitator will develop, deliver, manage, and supervise training of American Sign Language Interpreters with a goal of improving their Educational Interpreter Performance and Assessment (EIPA) scores. This person will also focus on creating a positive working relationship with students, families, staff, and various members of the community and will provide specialized consultative services in the area of interpreting for other areas within WCSD.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develops and implements district-wide, ongoing professional learning for appropriate staff in the area of American Sign Language (ASL) to include best practices in communication transfer process. Develops and revises instructional materials and training procedures. Works to build skills and abilities of ASL Interpreters with a goal of improving their EIPA scores. Mentors and supports other district staff as necessary.
• Attends IEP meetings, school police interviews and other sensitive meetings to serve as the interpreter as needed. Provides other interpreter services as needed by the District.
• Collaborates with various district and community partners to establish a positive relationship between Washoe County School District (WCSD) and these partners and coordinate services for our families.
• Coordinates the assignments of interpreters, with special education staff and site administrators, on a routine basis for absences, and additional requests (i.e., graduations, field trips, etc.). Provides substitute coverage, if needed.
• Works with Principals on supervision, evaluation and mentoring of interpreters to increase technical sign language skills. Acts as liaison between user agencies, affiliated agencies, and other local, state and federal agencies in matters related to ASL training.
• Serves as a resource person to administrative/educational staff, resource personnel, and community agencies in promoting understanding and sensitivity to the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing population and the role of the ASL Interpreter.
• In collaboration with Special Education Leadership, maintains knowledge of ongoing technical and legal developments and meets with representatives of local, state, and federal governments to guarantee the department's ability to meet current and future needs and ensure compliance with applicable laws concerning ASL.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination of education/experience that could likely provide the required knowledge in qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Education: Bachelor's degree, which includes course work in communications, English, business or education along with the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Certification of 4.0 or better.

and

Experience: Three (3) years of experience practicing as an interpreter in a classroom.
Licenses/Certificates: Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment administered by a public or private organization which is approved by the Division and received a rating of his or her level of proficiency in providing interpreting services at least at level 4.0. Registered with the State of Nevada as an Educational and Community Interpreter.

Knowledge of: American Sign Language (ASL) etiquette; training development; adult learning and; files and records management, office procedures, and basic computer literacy.

Skill at: Communicating effectively both orally and in writing; working collaboratively with certified and education support professionals at various locations; implementing specialized instructional methods; effectively managing, supervising, and collaboration of assigning staff and or resources within the department; maintaining accurate and complete records, files, and reports, and interacting effectively with all individuals contacted during the course of work.

Additional Information: Must demonstrate a willingness to travel between schools, and work a flexible schedule

205 day position

Salary Range: $53, 972 - $83, 187

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by the Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position.

The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
