Job Description / Essential Elements:

ELK GROVE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

CLASS TITLE: SENIOR GROUNDS WORKER

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, coordinate and perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas; maintain and perform minor repairs to grounds maintenance equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Incumbents in the Senior Grounds Worker classification independently coordinate and perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties at an assigned high school site or an assigned group of sites. Incumbents in the Grounds Worker classification perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties at assigned District sites as part of a grounds crew.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Coordinate and perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas.

Confer with site administrators and assigned supervisor regarding grounds maintenance needs and programs at assigned sites.

Operate a variety of power and hand tools and motorized equipment including edgers, weed eaters, trimmers, gang mowers, chain saws and blowers; operate a tractor with attachments for flailing, rototilling, scraping, post hole digging and for aerating lawns.

Operate a District truck and trailer to haul and distribute sand and dirt and grounds equipment and materials as assigned by the position.

Maintain grounds maintenance equipment in safe operating condition; perform routine maintenance on a variety of grounds maintenance equipment including oil changes, lubrication and replacing filters, belts and cables.

Mow, edge, trim and rake lawns and athletic fields; plant, cultivate and water lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers; sweep litter from walk and driveways; load trucks with trimmings and trash and haul to appropriate location for disposal.

Prune trees, plants and shrubs utilizing a ladder as necessary; extract trees and shrubs as appropriate; reseed, fertilize and renovate lawns and fields; fertilize and cultivate flowerbeds.

Apply fertilizers and pest control methods to eradicate weeds, insects and other pests according to established procedures; maintain related records.

Monitor site irrigation systems; assist in the repair and maintenance of systems and controllers as needed.

Prepare, line, mark, drag, and maintain athletic fields and stadium and related areas as assigned by the position; participate in the coordinating the aeration and fertilization of sports fields.

Requisition grounds maintenance supplies in accordance with established procedures; maintain proper inventory levels.

Clean out water drainage in yards; clean and clear debris from gutters on buildings.

Train grounds maintenance staff as assigned; demonstrate proper use of tools and equipment.

Perform related duties as assigned.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding.

Methods, equipment and materials used in gardening and groundskeeping work.

Cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying of flowers, trees and shrubs.

Pruning techniques and methods.

Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.

Health and safety regulations.

Proper lifting techniques.

Basic record-keeping techniques.

Applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations related to assigned activities.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:

Perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas.

Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake and cultivate lawns, flowerbeds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas.

Operate hand and power tools and other equipment used in grounds maintenance.

Perform routine maintenance on grounds maintenance equipment.

Apply fertilizers.

Control weeds using mechanical and manual methods.

Work independently with little direction.

Apply and explain applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations related to assigned activities.

Observe legal and defensive driving practices.

Perform heavy physical labor.

Observe health and safety regulations.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Maintain routine records.

Meet schedules and time lines.

Speak, read and write English at a level required for satisfactory performance.

Reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.

Bend at the waist, stoop, kneel or crouch.

Dig holes and trenches.

Use proper lifting methods.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Any combination equivalent to: two years of grounds maintenance experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Class C driver's license.

Floor-lift 72 pounds and arm-lift 44 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:

Outdoor work environment.

Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions.

Exposure to fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease, gases.

May be required to drive as needed.

HAZARDS:

Working around and with machinery having moving parts.

Working at heights.

Power saws and flying debris.

Exposure to chemicals and fumes.
