Washington Alternative Learning Center

The Washington Alternative Learning Center is a 6-12 school located in Chattanooga, TN. We serve students in grades 6-12 from all over Hamilton County. We focus on positive student behavior and a safe, clean, and structured learning environment so that all students can achieve their academic potential. Our mission is to provide students with the fundamental tools necessary for overall success.

We are looking for teachers who are flexible in their pedagogy and practice. Empathy and understanding for students is a must and teachers must express a sincere desire for student growth. We emphasize strong teacher-student relationships, therefore an ability to connect with students and respect our students' backgrounds is essential.

Teaching candidates should consider working at Washington Alternative Learning Center because we can offer the most unique teaching experience in the district. We value academic achievement, but since we are an alternative school, we also place a strong emphasis on holistic student growth and development, which includes a sharp focus on behavior intervention and conflict management. We work together as a team in all matters concerning each of our students to ensure positive reinforcement of the whole child.


  1. Teaching & Learning - Deeply understand the Tennessee State English Language Arts Standards and establish clear learning targets for every lesson. Build rigorous and aligned assessments and consistently implement high leverage literacy practices. Follow Hamilton County Schools' instructional framework, including:

    • Setting High Expectations
    • Building a Productive Classroom Culture
    • Responsive Teaching and Learning
  2. Classroom Culture: Build a safe and productive classroom culture. Positive relationships are evident, procedures are clear, and the classroom is safe and secure for learning to unfold. Student and teacher interactions promote a growth mindset.
  3. Family & Community: Consistently develop strong relationships with students' families while diligently informing parents of expectations, positive news, and/or concerns about their children. Provide opportunities for parents to be involved in their children's learning.
  4. Professional Responsibilities: Actively participates in professional learning communities (PLCs) with colleagues in order to improve teaching and student learning. Reflect on instruction and leadership while contributing ideas, expertise, and time to the mission and goals of the school.

  • Teaching candidates must hold a valid state of Tennessee teaching certification in Middle Grades English (6-8), 6-12 English or be upcoming graduates in an accredited teacher preparation program. If you hold a teaching license in another state, you must apply for a Tennessee teaching license.
  • Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree.
