Essex Westford School District is seeking a motivated Senior Payroll Specialist to join our team of accounting and finance professionals!

The Senior Payroll Specialist will apply an advanced level of skill to coordinate and complete regularly occurring employee payroll including required federal, state, local, and district reporting. This role will also serve as a primary liaison within the district for payroll-related functions.

The Senior Payroll Specialist prepares and processes the District's payroll operations for approximately 1,400 hourly and salaried employees for each bi-weekly pay period. This role enters and maintains compensation information in the District's payroll system; processes, calculates, and posts a variety of payroll actions including wage garnishments, retroactive payments, payroll liability claims, overtime hours, payment for leave, and other related data in order to calculate and produce accurate pay for our staff. The Senior Payroll Specialist completes accurate and timely federal, local and state tax filings and related required payments. Additionally, this role serves as a liaison with financial institutions, auditors, schools, and other District departments and offices regarding payroll-related issues. The Senior Payroll Specialist plays an important role in continuous process improvement and innovation, ensuring exemplary customer service is provided to EWSD staff and partners.

EWSD is seeking candidates with previous payroll or accounting experience, including working knowledge of federal and VT state statutes, policies, and procedures. Strong technical skills are necessary along with the ability to successfully utilize technology to continually improve the payroll process.

Additionally, we are seeking candidates with the following skills and qualifications:
  • 5 years relevant payroll experience preferred but not required. Financial background with a combination of strong math and analytical skills may be considered in lieu of payroll experience.
  • Knowledge of federal and state payroll-related laws, statutes, and procedures to include FLSA, payroll tax, and wage reduction programs strongly preferred
  • Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail required
  • Ability to keep accurate records and prepare routine financial reports
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing and create positive working relationships with internal and external partners
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are required, experience with Google Suite preferred
