POSITION TITLE: VIRTUAL Summer School/ESY - AUTISM/LOW INCIDENCE SPECIALIST

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have or be eligible for Virginia licensure.

  • Special Education teacher certification.

  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) preferred.

  • Familiarity with Applied Behavioral Analysis.

  • Knowledge and experience working with low incidence disabilities (i.e. autism, down syndrome).

Orientation: July 2, 2021
Program Dates:
JULY 6 - JULY 30 (elementary school)
JULY 6 - AUG 6 (secondary school)
Location: TBD per Office of Special Education
Model: VIRTUAL
Summer assignments will be staffed based on student needs. Employees can apply for either a virtual or in-person assignment, however offers will be extended to meet the student needs and the instructional model. APS will make every effort to assign staff based on preference, however there is no guarantee that you will be assigned to the preference you elected. If you are not assigned based upon your preference, APS will keep your application on file should that preference become available.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical assistance to teachers of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down Syndrome and ID.

  • Provide technical assistance in the area of curriculum, assessment and research-based strategies.

  • Observe students with ASD and provide feedback to instructional staff for planning, strategies, behavior management and implementing evidence based strategies.

  • Conduct workshops for instructional staff as needed.

  • Attend student study, eligibility and IEP meetings for students as needed.

  • Participate as a member of related work groups/committees.

  • Maintain research library , including attendance at professional conferences to provide current information and best practices for instruction.


EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and low incidence disabilities in a school setting.

  • Experience with specific strategies for instruction, including: augmentative communication, assistive technology, PECS, and Individualized Behavior Management.

  • Experience and knowledge of alternative curriculums.

SALARY:
Summer School Teachers who are APS employees during the year will be paid the Non-VRS equivalant rate. ( Please note Salary earned relative to summer school employment will not be included in the employee's creditable compensation amount reported to the Virginia Retirement System (VRS).) Retired APS teachers will be paid $47.73 per hour per APS pay plan.Non-APS licensed summer school teachers will be paid $32.50 per hour. If you resign effective the last day of the school year, you will receive a flat rate of $32.50 per hour for teachers. Pay Plan 20/21 SY (Page 51)
