POSITION: Director, Special Education

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent, Special Education


The Director, Special Education is under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent, Special Education and provides leadership to the professionals and paraprofessionals in District programs, alternative programs, and other programs as assigned. Leadership is provided by creating, developing, directing, maintaining and evaluating an extensive range of direct and support services conducted on behalf of LEAs for students aged 5 to 21. The position requires extensive liaison with varied education-based agencies at the state and local level and is designed to build competency in the area of the special education supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Education and Experience

  • Masters degree, certification in special education supervision, five years of experience in the field of administration.
  • Plans, administers, and directs the District's special education programs.
  • Formulates and interprets Special Education policies and procedures; ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Administers and monitors the SPED budget.
  • Supervises department personnel (teachers).
  • Reviews student and teacher data that relates to the SPED program.
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of state and federal laws and guidelines regarding special education. Technical experience required includes state and federal special education law, staff development, supervision and leadership, state and federal budget development and management, curriculum and assessment, and interagency collaboration.

  1. Professional Certifications

PA Certification as Supervisor of Special Education or Pupil Services or Letter of Eligibility.
