Job Description

Position Overview

KIPP DC seeks energetic and dedicated specials teachers. Each school hopes to affirm students' identities and build students' talents outside of the core academic spaces. Below are examples of specials classes KIPP DC's elementary schools are seeking to offer:
  • African American Culture & Art: African American Culture & Art is a special that examines the history and culture of African-Americans through creative art. This class offers opportunities for understanding cultural, social, political, economic, and historical factors that have created and shaped Black experiences in the United States.
  • Physical Education: Physical Education celebrates the connection between the mind and body, building students' teamwork, social emotional, and cognitive skills through coordinated physical activity. The physical education teacher will have a strong grasp of physical education standards and create a positive, safe classroom environment for all students to learn.
  • Theater: Theater allows students to express themselves and amplify their voices. The theater teacher will partner with other fine arts teachers in music, dance, and art to build empowering and identity-affirming student programs.
  • Innovations: Investing in our students' knowledge of technology, Innovations is a special that combines computer science, robotics, and technology to engage students' curiosity. The Innovations teacher will have a strong STEM background with elementary students and a desire to build the next generation of tech leaders.


Although the above topics are most desired, teachers who have two or more years of teaching experience in a classroom setting and have a background in another fitness or fine arts category are encouraged to apply.

KEY REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Delivers challenging and engaging lessons linked to Common Core and state standards

  • Build a classroom culture that empowers students, affirms their identities, and creates a sense of belonging for all students
  • Implement the school-wide and classroom management policies and practices
  • While students receive instruction from 8:00 am-4:00 pm, KIPP DC teachers are on duty in school Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm two days a week, and 7:30 am to 4:35 pm three days a week.
  • Perform morning, lunch, and afternoon duties as assigned
  • Perform clerical duties, as required, relating to textbooks, instructional supplies, student reports and records, attendance reports, etc.
  • Attend staff, content, and grade-level meetings
  • Pass a FBI Fingerprint criminal background check, as required by law
  • Additional responsibilities may arise during the school year. This could include but not limited to: attending staff and student field trips, open houses, parent-teacher conferences, home visits, and other events involving parents and students as needed. They will be communicated to all employees with as much notice and flexibility as possible.
  • When determined necessary by local health and government officials, adjust learning schedule, location, and approach to best meet the needs of students and families


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (Required)
  • Commitment to working with students from communities with limited access to quality educational opportunities (Required)
  • At least two years of full-time teaching experience in the content area (Strongly Preferred)
  • At least one year of full-time teaching experience in a public school (Preferred)
  • KIPP DC prefers all teachers to be "Highly Qualified", which includes a Bachelor's degree and passing the appropriate Praxis exam(s) (Preferred)
  • Experience teaching in a predominantly African-American environment (Preferred)

  • Teachers have access to KIPP DC's additional development and enrichment opportunities such as RELAY's Masters of Arts in Teaching program, Special Education Fellowship, School Culture Champion Grants, Classroom Innovation Grants, and various fellowship and pilot programs launched each year
