Kentwood, a four-year high school of 1,900 students located east of Kent, offers a wide variety of courses in English, math, science, social studies, P.E., business, world language; including Mandarin Chinese, health, home and family life, technical and vocational courses, and other electives. PRIMARY PURPOSE :

The purpose of this position is to provide assistance to the principal in administering the education program, supervising, and providing guidance and direction to school instructional and support staff, and in managing the school building.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Participates in the evaluation of instructional and non-instructional staff; observes the performance of staff, and offers suggestions for performance improvement.

Assists in interviewing candidates for instructional and non-instructional positions; plans duty roster; conducts effective and relevant teachers' meetings.

Supervises and evaluates assigned phases of the educational program; initiates programs and organization with the adopted course of study; assists in the analysis of the effectiveness of the curriculum; recommends changes and in-service curricular activities as needed.

Coordinates and supervises annual required student testing.

Serves as a district representative in annual IEP meetings, evaluation meetings, and reevaluation meetings.

Encourages department heads to suggest and recommend program directions and improvements.

Prepares a variety of reports relating to curriculum plans and progress and other school matters; assures adequate supplies and materials are available; assures proper inventory of supplies, materials, furniture, and equipment.

Oversees the utilization of school building by outside groups; anticipates special needs involving custodial and maintenance staff; assures proper safety and health factors in the building.

Assists in organizing and administering extra-curricular activities within the school; assumes responsibility for disciplinary policies and actions; meets with parents in order to better understand and communicate with students.

Participates in the formulation of the annual school budget and master schedule.

OTHER JOB DUTIES

Maintains association and liaison with the community; contributes to the overall public relations program of the school and district.

Serves on a variety of committees and works on special projects as assigned.

Serves as a member of the leadership team of the school and district; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS :

Reports to the principal. Supervises certificated and classified staff members. Interacts regularly with teachers, other district staff, parents, community members, and administrators from other schools.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

The daily work is performed in a general administrative office setting. The position requires: visual and mental concentration with a high level of organization skill; a high level of interaction with others through routine communications; routine interruptions; heavy telephone contacts and a heavy meeting schedule; extra hours and regular attendance at functions before and after the regular work day; prolonged periods of sitting; occasional exposure to visual display terminal for prolonged periods; frequent dealings with distraught, angry, or hostile individuals; occasionally representing the district on potentially controversial matters.

Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and theories of school administration.
Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, standards, and state and local policies pertaining to senior high school administration.
Knowledge of effective methods and processes for program evaluation.
Knowledge of effective teaching methods, practices, and techniques.
Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
Knowledge of instructional technology.
Ability to provide direction and guidance to teachers, other staff, and students.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master's degree and completion of an accredited teacher training program as determined by the Washington State Department of Education and five years teaching experience; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work and to meet certification requirements.

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION

Valid Washington State administrative certificate.
