Job Summary
This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online at www.asdk12.org/laborrelations. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits. However, this position may have a flexible work calendar which may include duty days during summer, winter or spring breaks, with equivalent time off during the regular school year as mutually agreed upon by the employee and supervisor.

This position reports to and is evaluated by the site principal. An Instructional Coach may serve more than one school. The purpose of instructional coaching is to increase outcomes among students, addressing both growth and achievement, by building staff capacity through job embedded professional development and coaching in order to advance implementation of effective instructional practices, especially in the area of English Language Arts. This position supports the implementation of District adopted curriculum and resources through the use of research-based effective instructional strategies.
Instructional coaches, principals, and instructional staff work together to secure time for the collaboration to occur as outlined within the AEA contractual work schedule. This may include attending professional development together, meeting during shared planning time, and/or collaborating during designated before/after school staff meetings. Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.Three (3) or more years of successful elementary school teaching.Strong oral and written communication skills.

  1. Evidence of the following skills and abilities:
    1. Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills, including giving and receiving constructive feedback.Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with teachers and administrators.Experience in development, preparation, and presentation of professional development in a variety of formats.Experience in adult learning theory, and/or coaching, and mentoring scenarios.Experience using district, student, and site level data to select, implement, and differentiate instruction designed to meet individual student needs.Knowledge and experience of research, best practices in instructional design, differentiating instruction, and current educational trends.

Essential Job Functions
Change Agent
  1. Purpose: To engage instructional staff in collaborative reflection and problem solving about the impact of their instructional practices.Description: The coach helps instructional staff practice what they learn from professional development and transfer/synthesize their learning by co-planning, supporting, and brainstorming ways to utilize the information. The role of the coach helps facilitate the following:
    1. Fostering a safe, trusting, positive environmentFacilitating and guiding school-based professional developmentSharing alternatives and refinements for instructional practices

Teacher Leader
  1. Purpose: To support and communicate school and district initiatives with the school community.Description: A coach as a teacher leader assists to connect and support district initiatives, craft and monitor goal setting, and remain focused on the main goal of increasing student growth and achievement. The role of the coach helps facilitate the following:
    1. Implementation of site-based professional developmentActing as a strong advocate for student growth and achievementAssisting with implementation of Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) within school site

Data Coach
  1. Purpose: To facilitate conversations using data-based decision making.Description: A coach analyzes data at all levels to facilitate data conversations with instructional staff. The coach supports instructional staff and administrators in using data to improve instruction. The role of the coach helps facilitate the following:
    1. Collaboration with instructional staff on how to use and analyze data to improve student growth and achievementUnderstanding of ASD's comprehensive assessment systemFostering learning focused conversations

Instructional & Content Supporter
  1. Description: A coach supports instructional staff by helping with the why, what, and how of teaching and balances the continuum of coaching interactions—consulting, collaborating, and coaching. The role of the coach helps facilitate the following:
    1. Working with staff in collaborating, co-planning, modeling, and debriefing lessons with constructive feedbackSupport of instructional staff through new curriculum adoptions, priority plans, and updated assessmentsUse of standards to guide identification of essential knowledge and skills
Learner
  1. Purpose: To engage in continuous learning in order to keep current in educational practices and programs.Description: Coaches reach out to create learning communities. The coach as a learner, reflects on practice, is aware of the needs of an adult learner, understands the learning process, provides opportunities for proactive support, and leads others in their journey to improve practice. As learners, coaches are involved in the following:
    1. Engagement of professional development opportunities to build capacity as a reading expertEngagement in professional reading concerning content as well as instructional coaching practicesPractice and reflection on new learning

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

This position may have a flexible work calendar which may begin or end up to 21 calendar days before or after the school board adopted school calendar. Employees in this position will be required to complete an individual work calendar, and will receive pay on the same schedule as all other AEA employees.

Anchorage School District employees must possess the ability to read and write in English. This also includes the ability to communicate in English with school staff, co-workers, and the public; as well as have the ability to comprehend and carry out oral and written directions and understand and follow English instructions and written documents.
