CDF Freedom School Lead Teacher

The CDF Freedom Schools Lead Teachers work as paid summer camp instructors from Monday to Friday and between 7:45am and 3:00pm with children in grades 6-8. Lead Teachers must be willing to attend debriefing sessions each day from 3:15pm until 4:00pm. Instructors lead a literacy rich curriculum during the morning and lead enrichment activities in the afternoon. Each Friday, Lead Teachers are expected to chaperone and actively monitor Scholars which includes a culminating field study post program. Attendance at weekly parent meetings during the summer is expected. Lead Teachers must also attend a local pre-training, and those who have not previously done so must attend weeklong training in Tennessee and a post-training.

He or she should be familiar with the culture and dynamics of W. A. Perry Middle School and Richland County School District One and committed to the goals of the CDF Freedom Schools program, and able to work collaboratively with all program constituents. University-age young people and recent college graduates play a key role in the CDF Freedom Schools program as Lead Teachers. CDF Freedom Schools Lead Teachers are responsible for the frontline care and nurturing of the children. Using the Integrated Reading Curriculum, they serve as facilitators in the classroom and as leaders of parent workshops and community outreach activities.

Responsibilities:

· Deliver the Integrated Reading Curriculum to a class of no more than 10 students for 6-8 weeksduring the summer months, according to the standards developed by the Children's Defense Fund and the local program sponsors.

· Set up and break down his or her classroom space, including securing and organizing the appropriate materials.

· Collaborate with staff to establish and maintain a supportive and structured environment for the children entrusted to their care.

· Serve as a Harambee Leader each day of program operation.

· Actively monitor Scholars during afternoon duty, morning duty and ALL transitions.

· Serve as a leader of afternoon activities and other special events plus chaperon field studies.

· Participate fully in the June National Training from June 3rd – June 9th 2016 (1st, year Servant Leader Interns only)

Basic Qualifications:

· Must be 19 years of age, completed at least one year of college, and have plans to complete their college degree

· Maintain or have graduated with at least a 3.0 G.P.A.

· Solid commitment to children's advocacy and enthusiasm for the CDF Freedom Schools program

· Ability to motivate others and work as part of an intergenerational team

· Specific experience working with youth from inner city areas

· Strong appreciation and understanding of the culture and history of the scholars

· Willingness to be open and respectful of all racial/ethnic backgrounds

· Willingness to strive for excellence in all areas and ability to think critically and analytically

· Exhibit positive attitude and behavior; model a mature and professional demeanor; excellent

· Exceptional written and verbal skills

· Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to the ethics of character, humility and servant Leadership

· Strong experience with youth behavioral management that develops youths' sense of self-discipline and individual growth

· Current registered voter

· Authorization for background check for criminal and child protective findings
