BACKGROUND ON ONE CITY SCHOOLS

One City Schools is a Wisconsin-based nonprofit organization that provides high quality educational opportunities for young children. Our mission is to seed a new model of public education that ensures young children are on track to succeed in a college or career preparatory program from birth through high school graduation. Our vision is of a Greater Madison community (and country) where all children are prepared to contribute and succeed as adults. More importantly, we aim to partner with families and the broader community to cultivate children who become free, global and deep thinkers, curious learners, effective problem solvers, humanitarians, happy people and young people who care about the world around them.

One City Expeditionary Elementary School (OCEES) is an EL Education Network School, offering the highly regarded Expeditionary Learning curriculum in kindergarten through 4th grade (and eventually through grade 6). It is also a unique, two-generation public school, authorized by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents, that provides a tuition-free education to children and works directly with families to ensure children are inspired, learning, growing and achieving to their full potential. OCEES is also the only public school in Wisconsin that offers both a longer school day (8:15am to 5:00pm) and longer school year (219 days vs 180 days in traditional public schools), including 60-minutes of co-curricular extended-day learning academies in Sports, Fitness, STEM, Girl Scouts, Boys to Men and Creative and Performing Arts. However, our educators work a standard 8-hour workday.

We are currently located in a 57,000 square foot building on Madison's Nob Hill on the South Side of our capital city. However, this fall, we will move into our permanent home, a $12 million facility located at 1707 W. Broadway in Monona, Wisconsin, a small city locate on the South Side of our capital city just three minutes from our current location. This 13.5 acre campus includes a 157,000 school facility that will eventually serve grades K - 12 , a 714-stall parking deck with underground access, a wooded nature are for science and outdoor learning, and outdoor play space. The campus is situated just 5 blocks from Lake Monona, just north of Lake Waubesa and 10 minutes from downtown Madison.

ACADEMIES COORDINATOR PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Academies Coordinator will lead our Extended Learning Academies, which are typically 4 to 8-week mini-courses and learning expeditions that our students engage in at One City on a daily basis "within" our longer school day. Our Academies include learning through sports, fitness/physical education, creative and performing arts, digital arts, community service initiatives and STEM. They operate as an extension of our regular education program by providing opportunities for our students to engage in organized physical and applied learning, and programs and activities that build their competence, confidence, self-esteem, love of learning, and their ability and desire to participate in teams and community service.

Our Academies also give our students an opportunity to identify their gifts and passions, andengage in activities that their parents might not be able to afford financially on their own. To ensure our Academies are successful, the responsibilities of the Academies Coordinator include:

Program Leadership 

  • Works with our Extended Learning Academies Manager, and One City teachers and staff to develop and execute the annual plan for our Extended Learning Academies.
  • Helps recruit Academy coaches, teachers, partners and external providers to offer and lead different academies for our students.
  • Partners with classroom teachers to connect classroom learning and expeditions to our extended learning academies, when and where appropriate.
  • Coordinates, organizes and assesses the different academies we offer, in partnership with One City's leadership team, faculty and staff.
  • Plans and instructs some Academies themselves, where appropriate.
  • Supports children’s social, emotional, physical, cognitive and sociolinguistic development.
  • Provides and maintains a clean and orderly learning environment wherever our Academies take place.

Curriculum

  • Keeps current in knowledge and practice of the curriculum, child development and relevant theories of learning, and ensuring that each learning academy has a legitimate lesson/learning plan.
  • Committed to sharing their knowledge for continual improvement of our extended learning academies.

Instructional Skill

  • Plans and implements an extended learning program that adheres to One City’s philosophy, goals and objectives, and meets the individual needs and interests of children.
  • Monitors and assesses the learning and development of each child, and provides progress reports as required.
  • Works cooperatively with designated support staff and service providers.
  • Recognizes learning challenges and makes referrals and interventions as appropriate.
  • Uses effective oral and written expression.

Child Guidance

  • Develops, in accordance with One City, City of Madison Accreditation and state guidelines, reasonable rules of student behavior and conduct, and appropriate techniques that are consistently applied.
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Shares responsibility during the day for the supervision of students in all areas of the school.

Family Connections

  • Builds and maintains positive and engaging relationships with parents.

Professionalism

  • Respects and honors the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, families, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics, and state and federal laws.
  • Upholds and enforces school policies, administrative procedures, and relevant federal, state, local and school rules and regulations, and is supportive of them to the public.
  • Maintains appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of planning time.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other staff members.
  • Strives to communicate the positive aspects of One City to the public in word and deed.
  • Helps maintain a clean an orderly educational environment and facility, and at all times and shows grace and support when engaging children, parents and guests who utilize or visit One City.

Compensation will be consistent with One City’s approved compensation plan as stipulated by the Board of Directors.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong commitment to the mission, vision, goals and objectives of One City, and to working to with young children from diverse racial/cultural populations and their families.
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience, or have interned or trained at One City.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills.
  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative and proactive.
  • Ability to regularly and routinely lift and push at least 50 pounds.
  • Completion of a background check required.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
