PRE-TECH INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE - INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, DESIGN, ENGINEERING AND ART

Essex Westford School District is hiring for full-time, school-year Instructional Aides to assist in one of our Pre-Tech programs with a specific focus in Information Technology, Design, Engineering and Art. The positions begin with the 2021-2022 school year at our Center for Technology. The typical work schedule is 6.5 hours/day during student days.

Pre-Technical Education is a one-year, six-period program for sophomores who thrive in project-oriented experiences that emphasize applied academics. Students are involved in a wide variety of cutting-edge technical activities where they learn science, mathematics, and communication skills while building personal development assets. Much of the learning takes place outside a traditional classroom and instead uses authentic locations to engage reluctant students and to provide experiences for deeper and more relevant learning. The teaching strategy employed by the program's instructors is to create "teachable moments" frequently by giving students new and challenging experiences by exploring curriculum content from the many various programs offered at the center. Any student would find this program a refreshing alternative to conventional classroom instruction and it is particularly valuable to students who may be frustrated academically.

The Pre-Tech program offers high school credit in English, mathematics, science, fine arts, physical education and an elective. The all-day program (9:15 a.m. to 2:05 p.m.) provides project-based experiential activities that introduce students to career experiences in the areas of Information Technology, Design, Engineering and Art programs that are offered at CTE. Integrated academics enhance and support learning activities in the technical skill areas. We are seeking an instructional aide with specialized skills to serve this program.

Qualified candidates will possess the following:
  • A minimum of an Associates Degree or 48 college credits with demonstrated competencies in one or more of the following areas: technical skills, academic skills, special education
  • Prior experience in the areas of Information Technology, Design, Engineering and Art
  • Flexibility and ability to work as a member of a team in delivering experiential learning activities to adolescents in all kinds of settings (classroom, lab, community, work sites) with all age groups (preschoolers, senior citizens, peer groups, adult workers, supervisors and employers on job sites)
  • Ability to follow instructional plans and activities as outlined by different teachers with different teaching styles
  • Ability to work with students one-on-one, in small groups and in large groups to assist them in completing assignments
  • Ability to discern when situations need intervention by the aide or by the teacher and to refer appropriately to the teacher
  • Experience working with and ability to work effectively with adolescents and young adults, including those at risk
