The literacy coach maintains a positive, caring, and supportive learning culture and environment for the diverse student population of PPSD. As part of the leadership team, the coach helps foster a professional learning community focused on analyzing student data to inform the instructional priority and/or school improvement plan. Additionally, they will be required to provide teachers with support through coaching, observation, and feedback, as well as build the capacity of teachers to improve student outcomes. The coach supports teachers with the implementation of high-quality instructional strategies aligned to CCSS, WIDA, TESOL, SLA, and NGSS, with a focus on supporting all students academically, linguistically and socio emotionally.
Coaching occurs through creating and delivering professional development, side-by-side planning and coaching, modeling lessons, observing lessons and providing non-evaluative feedback, and making use of critical data to design instruction that supports individual student needs.

Additionally, the literacy coach will:
  • Participate in an annual review process to assess the overall effectiveness of the performance as a literacy coach in the areas of responsibilities outlined below.


Roles & Responsibilities
I. Instructional Leadership
  • Provides instructional coaching, demonstration lessons, collaborative co-teaching opportunities, lesson planning, and observations with peer feedback to increase achievement and close gapsConducting sessions of observation and feedback for all teachersParticipates in regularly scheduled coach meetings and professional learning experiences (PLE)Participates in professional learning during the summer (Paid at the professional development rate)Develops expertise by participating in district initiatives on leadership and coaching development and training, including the recording and analysis of professional practice and coaching sessionsDemonstrates a strong working knowledge of literacy, WIDA, TESOL, SLA, CCSS, and NGSS standards and best practices, use of materials, and specific instructional topics across content areas.Continues to develop professional expertise through professional learning experiences, readings, training, and conferences.Strong background in Multilingual Learner pedagogy and research based best practicesAssists teachers in organizing classrooms with an instructional focus for literacy and MLL instruction.Develops and conducts professional development for targeted audiences, including classroom teachers, in the content area of ELA and ELD, as well as supporting reading instruction through other content areas. Models effective teaching techniques when presenting to groups and other professionals. Provides follow-up support to the elementary network and site-based training.Trains and assists teachers in selection and use of a variety of assessment instruments. Models and coaches how to administer assessments and collect data. Conducts data conferences with classroom teachers to interpret data and plan instruction, and assists teachers in using assessment data to plan appropriate instruction.Mentors teachers who are new to teaching and to the school.Participates in district initiatives on leadership and coaching development and trainingMaintains a weekly schedule that prioritizes coaching in classrooms, collaborative planning sessions (PLC/CPT), and all other duties that align with the instructional priority/school improvement plans and administrative expectations.Provides targeted instruction to small groups of studentsModels the school's values and standards for professional conduct; consistently demonstrates best practices for communicating with students, staff, and families
II. Management of Multilingual Learner Programs and Needs
  • Ensures that state and national education policies and regulations are in implemented and in compliance to ensure that students Civil Rights are properly maintainedWorks with Principal to ensure that the school's policies and procedures for holding all students to high academic, linguistic and behavioral expectations are understood and promoted with consistency across all staffWorks collaboratively with the Elementary and/or Secondary Network and Office of Multilingual Learners to meet the needs of MLLsWorks Collaboratively with the School's Evaluation Team/Special Education Staff to meet the needs of all students with specialized learning needs, including dually identified students. Attends TQP meetings to serve as an advocate/liaison for MLL students.Serves as the point person for meeting with families upon enrolling, properly scheduling (Assigning ELD Course Codes in Skyward) and transitioning MLLs to the school's program as well as planning for and implementing MLL parent engagement programsMaintains accurate and up-to-date student records to provide teachers with the most important data and background information needed to successfully meet their unique needs as well as to parents to keep them up-to-date on their child's progress in acquiring language and academic content
III. Oversight of Common Spaces/Communication
  • Maintains a professional library and resources as well as planning space for MLL teachers or any general education teachers who plan and collaborate togetherPerforms any other duties as assigned.

Salary Rate Range
Teacher Salary Scale + up to 5 extra days

Elem. KG-6 or Elem. 1-6 with ESL Certification (and/or agreement to pursue ESL or Bilingual/Dual Language Certification)

Qualifications
  • RI Teacher Certification Grades 1-6 as noted in the certification section aboveDemonstrated expertise regarding the education of Multilingual LearnersMaster's Degree (from an accredited college) preferredMinimum of 5 years of successful classroom teaching in an urban setting with experience in Grades 3-5National Board Certification in an area related to ELA/Multilingual Learners (preferred)Experience as an instructional coach (preferred)Evidence of professional development regarding current research, regulations and national trends related to literacy instruction and instruction for MLLs and Special Education studentsExperience in coaching and providing professional development opportunitiesExperience coordinating/leading MLL programsExperience with state and federal regulations regarding the education of MLLsStrong communication and organizational skillsKnowledgeable in software applications ie. Excel, Word, PPT. Google, Data PlatformsMultilingual candidate in one of our district's top languages preferred (Spanish, Swahili, Arabic, Khmer, Portuguese, Creole)
