Are you an experienced automotive mechanic with a passion for sharing your knowledge and skills?

Essex Westford School District's Center for Technology is seeking an experienced automotive mechanic to assist the instructor in teaching Automotive Mechanics to students enrolled in our fast-paced career and technical program. The position shall involve assisting the program instructors in the education of students including management of student behavior; record keeping; instructional assistance; leading groups of students with relative independence in automotive repair activities; classroom and field work/laboratory safety, security, set-up and organization; and interaction and communication with students, support staff, parents/guardians, and other internal and external constituents. The position shall also involve taking responsibility for a variety of facets of the operation of the automotive lab including but not limited to ordering, communicating with vendors and sub-contractors, and independently completing automotive repair activities.

Position is full-time (6.5 hours/day, 180 days per year) beginning in the 2021-2022 school-year. If EWSD resumes in-person instruction, this position may begin April 29, 2021 for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year.

The successful candidate shall possess the following:
  • A minimum of an Associates Degree or 48 college credits an institute of higher learning, plus a minimum of 5 years as a mechanic performing related work.
  • Experience working with and ability to work effectively with adolescents and young adults, including those at risk of dropping out of school.
  • Flexibility and ability to work as a member of a team in delivering experiential learning activities to adolescents in all kinds of settings (classroom, lab, community, work sites) with adult workers, supervisors and employers on job sites.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability in general automotive repair including engines, exhausts, steering and wheel alignment, general maintenance, auto shop work flow including scheduling and supervision of repair projects, service desk management including customer invoicing.
  • Good basic supervisory skills.
  • Ability to attend required or requested training, meetings, and professional growth activities outside of school hours (i.e. summers and after-school).
  • Ability to obtain First aid and CPR training.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the OSHA/VOSHA regulations governing program activities also preferred. Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain an OSHA 30 Hour Safety Training certification required.
  • Ability to follow instructional plans and activities as outlined by the teacher.
  • Ability to work with students one-on-one, in small groups and in large groups to assist them in completing assignments.
  • Ability to discern when situations need intervention by the aide or by the teacher and to refer appropriately to the teacher.
