SENIOR ACCOUNTANT - BUSINESS

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under the general supervision of the Controller, plans, coordinates and supervises various functions within the Business office, including possibly enterprise fund accounting, student activity fund accounting, accounting for capital projects, maintenance of the general ledger, and preparation of schedules and reports for the annual audit and Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) depending on the nature of the assignment. Performs related work as required.
EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepares complex financial schedules, interim financial statements, cost analyses, bank and general ledger account reconciliations, and reports as needed; performs research and analysis as required; performs special projects, including review of annual and interim financial statements and reports, analytical studies and assist management with directing implementation of Governmental Accounting Standards.

Completes year-end schedules, notes, and other items relating to the year-end audit; maintains general ledgers of governmental and proprietary funds that include reviewing, analyzing, and balancing detailed schedules and subsidiary journals and reviewing balance sheet, revenue, and expenditure/expense ledgers and financial statements for unusual fluctuations.

Researches and applies District policies and procedures, Nevada Revised Statutes, and accounting principles to work assignments; develops and maintains policies and procedures manuals for assigned areas and funds; and monitors, troubleshoots, and documents the student activity fund accounting system for quality assurance and operational efficiency.

Reconciles investments, allocation of interest, realized and unrealized losses, and monthly interest accrual.

Assign and review work of professional staff; develops and provides training and support for accounting technicians, accountants, and related staff.

If assigned to nutrition services area, provides cash management for all daily, weekly, monthly and annual cash, checks and credit card transactions made at each school site for payments related to the Food Service Program including point of sale and posting to computerized accounting systems. Additionally, forecasts cash inflows and outflows to make sure that the appropriate cash is on hand to meet the day-to-day operations of the fund. Incumbent reconciles all cash accounts on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

Provides analytical review of assigned funds; conducts periodic site audits to ensure compliance with established procedures; assists schools and departments in maintaining accounting records by using various reports and accessing the computerized accounting system.

Assists with maintaining the general ledger/accounts payable/fixed assets computerized accounting system with the assistance of the Information Technology Department. Ensures that proper procedures are used in utilizing the system. Designs reports in order to access information from the system.

Prepares journal entries for maintaining account balances, correcting account classification errors, recording transfers of expenditures, and distributing costs.

Reviews records and required local, state and or federal financial reports for accuracy, consistency, compliance with statutory requirements and adherence to policies and procedures to ensure adherence and financial integrity; communicates with management and other staff regarding the timeliness, accuracy, and implications of financial records and data; provide information regarding fund and account status to management in a timely manner
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education/Experience : Any combination equivalent to education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in accounting, business or any other related field;

  • AND
  • Three (3) years of professional experience in governmental accounting, including two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.

  • Knowledge of : Principles of supervision; governmental accounting practices; public finance; pronouncements by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA); computerized business systems and personal computers.

    Skill at : Performing mathematical calculations; analyzing financial data; identifying and correcting inaccuracies; communicating in writing and verbally with a wide range of technical and non-technical people; staff supervision; interacting effectively with a wide variety of professional personnel and working independently with minimum supervision.

    Licenses/Certificates : Possession of a Certified Public Accountant Certificate is desirable.

    Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step (step one) of the grade of the position.

    The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
