Main Purpose of the Role:

Promotes and nurtures the education of students by planning and tailoring learning experiences. Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the cognitive, physical, social and emotional development of students. Proactively communicates with parents to keep them informed of student progress and potential concerns. Works collaboratively with teammates for the betterment of student learning and the school.

Key Responsibilities: (The primary tasks, functions and deliverables of the role)

  • Select and plan appropriate learning and teaching activities that are in alignment with Henderson International School standards and the Henderson Academic Plan. Develop lessons that engage students in higher order and critical thinking and complex problem-solving.
  • Exercise Responsive Classroom management focused on Positive Behavior Support with the use of fair and consistent expectations of behavior along with appropriate natural consequences that are clearly articulated to the students.
  • Support students in taking responsibility for their own growth and learning, helping them build a Growth Mindset.
  • Know and use a wide range of assessment strategies, both formative and summative, consistent with course content and learning objectives.
  • Keep gradebook up to date on student progress; write personalized, specific and helpful comments related to Spanish class for report cards.
  • Differentiate instruction and assessment to meet the diverse needs and levels of readiness of students.
  • Provide opportunities for student expression using spoken, written, creative and electronic forms of communication.
  • Provide a safe and nurturing learning environment, one of mutual respect, in which students can take intellectual risks. Assist students in taking responsibility for their own actions and choices.
  • Create a stimulating and challenging and organized learning environment with effective use of classroom displays, charts and reference materials.
  • Collaborate with both your Spanish team and your division team on a weekly basis.
  • Attend and participate in staff development programs, faculty events and meetings, and serve on staff committees and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) as required.
  • Teach students to set realistic goals and to use their time in a constructive and balanced manner.
  • As needed, serve as an Advisor to middle school students. Maintain student portfolios and facilitate student-led conferences following division requirements.
  • Use existing and emerging technologies as integral tools to support teaching and learning.
  • Helps students develop attitudes, habits of mind, and skills that will enable them to become lifelong learners, critical thinkers and empathetic problem-solvers.
  • Help to maintain a collaborative and supportive atmosphere for students, faculty, and families.
  • Attend functions in support of school and community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum and instruction within the appropriate content area and/or grade level(s).
  • Ability to understand and articulate all the elements, goals, and instructional best practice strategies embodied in the Henderson Academic Plan.
  • Confident, proactive and positive communication skills dealing with parents with high expectations.
  • Ability to function as a student achievement advocate and advisor - to mentor and coach students.
  • Highly-developed written and verbal communication skills, listening and presentation skills.
  • Effective organizational skills including but not limited to lesson planning, implementing units of study, differentiating instruction, designing and administering assessments, analyzing data to inform instructional choices.
  • Ability to monitor student progress and report relevant data in a timely manner.
  • Highly developed collaborative skills with the ability to work well with others as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize and to expend allotted resources in alignment with stated academic priorities.
  • Demonstrate in your actions the Mission, Vision, and Guiding Principles of the school.
  • Ability to foster and maintain a positive school climate.

Required

Bachelor Degree

Demonstrated knowledge and experience developing and utilizing curriculum and adapting instruction to meet the individual needs of students.

Experience with integration of instructional technology.

Min. of 2 yrs. in a high-achieving classroom environment.

Preferred

Master Degree

State license/certification, preferred

Experience teaching Spanish through Comprehensible Input (CI), including Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS).

Trained in TPRS.

Native Spanish speaker.

Experience with standards-based assessment, grading and reporting.
