Title: Financial Controller

Reports to:  Chief Officer, Finance and Talent

Location: Brookline, MA preferred

Status: Full Time, Exempt

Start: Immediately

The Financial Controller is responsible for managing all finance, accounting and reporting activities for our large-size educational nonprofit. As the number-two executive to the Chief Officer, Finance and Talent, you will be involved in supporting presentations to the board finance and audit committee and will work closely with the senior leadership team.

Who You Are: You are an experienced, seasoned, and flexible leader who is not afraid to roll-up their sleeves and has led day-to-day finance operations while supervising a team with functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. You bring high standards, integrity and credibility and bring a keen attention to detail that ensures systems and procedures are in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. You have demonstrated experience building team, raising team performance, promoting staff professional development, and implementing training programs. You demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a customer-service orientation that supports program and fundraising leaders and their operations. In addition, you will partner with the CO, Finance and Talent, senior leadership, and the human resources (HR), development, and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR, development, and IT functions. You have demonstrated experience with systems upgrade/implementation and streamlining and automating accounting functions.

Who We Are: We are a small team with a big impact. We are responsible for accurately, ethically and efficiently managing the organization's financial resources. We work closely with the President's office, Board, Finance and Audit Committees to set the annual budget and ensure we stay on track. We collaborate with all other departments from managing and reporting out on grants to processing payroll.  We utilize Accufund, Paylocity, and other systems and databases to support our financial operations, although we are looking to replace Accufund with an improved financial management system.

General Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements; coordinate all audit activity.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assist leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results.
  • Support the CO, Finance and Talent in engaging the board’s audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting.
  • Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Regularly assess financial processes and systems with a goal of continuous improvement and efficiency.

Qualifications/skills:

  • BA/BS in Accounting required; Masters in Accounting preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience leading a finance function and team
  • Experience selecting and overseeing software installations; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software
