Role Mission:

The Director of K-4 Literacy (DoL) will ensure that VCP continually improves our model for instructional excellence in regard to student outcomes, effectiveness of K-4 school-wide systems for literacy instruction, and strategic support of all K-4students and staff, in partnership with the Senior Director of Curriculum and elementary school principals. The Director of K-4 literacy will combine a capacity for systems-level and strategic thinking, deep literacy content and instructional knowledge, careful attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills in building relationships with critical internal and external stakeholders. The Director of K-4 Literacy will report to the Senior Director of Curriculum and Instruction.



Your Impact:


• Serve as the content expert for literacy in in K-4, including guided reading, ELA, and phonics.
o Oversee the creation, development and revision of all K-4 literacy materials, including lesson plans, instructional plans, and scopes & sequences
o Develop K-4 instructional leaders through co-observation, live coaching and professional development.
o Support K-4 instructional leaders in planning and leading Intellectual Prep meetings related to K-4 Literacy.
o Lead monthly stepback meetings with the network SDCI, elementary school principals and K-4 instructional leaders;
• Deliver high quality training and professional development in support of literacy content development
o Plan and lead all network wide literacy PD for K-4 staff, and support campus teams in creating and leading data-based literacy PD;
o Be accountable for K-4 students' mastery of academic standards in literacy.
• Own the coordination and administration of all literacy assessments in VCP elementary schools. These Responsibilities include:
o Create or review all internal literacy assessments for grades K-4, including interim assessments, unit assessments and bi-weekly quizzes/progress monitoring, and ensure that all required assessments are accessible by teachers;
o Coordinate testing schedule for all internal assessments and for STEP testing
o Lead student achievement data analysis conversations to critically and strategically respond to the learning needs of students;
• Collaborate with the Network Support Team to ensure that schools are receiving necessary instructional supports and that priorities are being fully executed on each campus
o Build a strong organizational culture that is aligned with VCP Core Observable Behaviors and leadership traits and ensures that all schools are successful
o Problem-solve solutions to challenges common to all schools in network
o Support the execution of VCP's strategic plan and ensure key targets are met, facilitating additional professional development (i.e. sessions, 1:1s, experiences, etc) when necessary
• Develop K-4 Principal capacity to lead toward exceptional outcomes for students. These Responsibilities include:
o In collaboration with the SDCI and Director of Schools, support Principals in leading and overseeing high-quality literacy instruction for K-4 schools (curriculum and assessment);
o Conduct quarterly observational rounds with principals to develop vision of excellence related to literacy instruction
o Support Principals in ensuring that every student shows dramatic achievement gains in literacy and that all schools meet the ambitious performance goals set by Vista College Prep;
o Work with principals to set teacher professional development priorities for the year related to literacy and break them down to 5-6 week cycles (aligned to data and school needs);
• Develop literacy instructional knowledge and coaching capacity across K-4 Instructional Leaders, and support network wide professional development of instructional staff as a member of the network Curriculum and Instruction team. These Responsibilities include:
o Analyze and action plan with K-4 instructional leaders around student achievement data, observation and coaching data, and student behavior data
o Develop content professional development scope and sequence for K-4 literacy teachers and coaches;
o Lead network-wide K-4 literacy professional development, including summer training;
o Conduct co-observations and instructional rounds with K-4 instructional leaders to build vision of excellence and coaching capacity;
o Consult with the special education team to develop and implement effective literacy interventions for at-risk students;
o Help design outstanding site-based and network-wide professional development, including differentiated Summer Professional Development for new and returning staff
• Collaborate with the Network Support Team to ensure that schools are receiving necessary instructional supports and that priorities are being fully executed on each campus
o Support diversity, equity and inclusion and anti-racism priorities throughout the network, specifically as they relate to curriculum and instruction
o Build a strong organizational culture that is aligned with VCP Core Observable Behaviors and leadership traits and ensures that all schools are successful
o Problem-solve solutions to challenges common to all schools in network
o Support the execution of VCP's strategic plan and ensure key targets are met, facilitating additional professional development (i.e. sessions, 1:1s, experiences, etc) when necessary

Your Qualifications:


• Passionate commitment to the mission of Vista College Prep;
• Mastery of and enthusiasm for academic subjects and instructional coaching;
• Track record of producing dramatic, demonstrable student achievement gains or comparable results in current field;
• Ability to approach situations with optimism and perseverance;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• Excellent organizational skills and extremely careful attention to detail and follow-through;
• Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree; Master's degree preferred;
• Minimum of four years leading or coaching leaders in urban public school setting preferred;
• Experience as a Principal, AP, or equivalent leadership role and/or at a high-performing charter school highly preferred ;
• Spanish proficiency or fluency preferred;
• Valid IVP fingerprint clearance card.
