Position Summary: The Film and Video teacher at Forman is an important member of the Arts Department, developing in students the ability to express their ideas through a visual medium. The ideal candidate will demonstrate passion for filmmaking, have solid technical skills, and a desire to help students develop their own creative vision. A strong filmmaking background is critical with the ability to work in narrative, documentary, and experimental genres. S/he should be forward thinking in their pedagogical outlook and interested in the entire educational process.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Help students find their unique artistic voice and express this through the medium of film/video
  • Develop in students an understanding of the aspects of“story” and promote a rich storytelling environment
  • Train students in the technical aspects of film/video, helping them gain proficiency in areas such as editing, sound, special effects, animation, and lighting
  • Assist students in creating a portfolio of work and entry to festivals and competitions
  • Develop in students an analytical and critical knowledge of the history of film/video.
  • Promote both narrative and non-narrative forms of video production
  • Ability to teach the screenwriting process
  • Aid students in understanding various visual communication strategies and the utilization of these strategies in their own work.
  • Ability to collaborate with teachers across disciplines to develop interdisciplinary curriculum and projects
  • Fosters an environment in which students learn to think critically and independently
  • Communicates effectively with a variety of different constituencies in writing and verbally
  • Demonstrates patience and empathy with adolescents and focuses on fully developing well-rounded individuals
  • Implements best practices to support the needs of diverse learners
  • Serves the needs of the students through residential, extracurricular, and co-curricular programs. Individual duties may vary but will likely include the following:
  • Primary or relief dorm parent
  • Advisor
  • Coach two athletic or extracurricular activities if not a primary dorm parent
  • Chaperone weekend activities as part of a rotating duty schedule
  • Assist in clubs and/or various school activities/programs

Other Expectations: This position is a member of a boarding school faculty. Candidates should be interested in contributing outside of the classroom and becoming fully involved in the student life program. Faculty are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of School life.

JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience teaching film/video at the high school or college level
  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree in related field; MFA degree preferred
  • Student-centered educator, skilled in facilitating student discussion and collaboration
  • Experience in curriculum design and innovative teaching practices
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively in a variety of formats
  • Strong verbal skills
  • Experience with working with students with different learning styles
  • Ability to engage parents and create healthy relationships with students
