Position Summary: A Thinking and Writing teacher at Forman plays an integral role in developing positive and confident adolescent writers. The ideal candidate should be well versed in writing techniques, student-centered in their approach, and curious about the learning process of diverse learners. S/he should be forward thinking in their pedagogical outlook and interested in the entire educational process.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists students in the creation of knowledge and the expression of ideas
  • Inspires student writers and develops a confidence in the writing process
  • Promotes student agency and independence in the writing process through appropriate support and structure
  • Develops in students the ability to write persuasively in a variety of formats and disciplines
  • Aids students in their understanding of the conventions of writing, the function of grammar, and the importance of revision
  • Provides consistent, timely, and constructive feedback in both writing and verbally
  • Willingness to facilitate a writing tutor program utilizing remote tutors
  • Ability to develop curricula that meets the needs of diverse, reluctant, and/or struggling writers
  • Ability to collaborate with teachers across disciplines to develop interdisciplinary curriculum and projects
  • Fosters an environment in which students learn to think critically and independently
  • Communicates effectively with a variety of different constituencies in writing and verbally
  • Demonstrates patience and empathy with adolescents and focuses on fully developing well-rounded individuals
  • Implements best practices to support the needs of diverse learners
  • Serves the needs of the students through residential, extracurricular, and co-curricular programs. Individual duties may vary but will likely include the following:
  • Primary or relief dorm parent
  • Advisor
  • Coach two athletic or extracurricular activities if not a primary dorm parent
  • Chaperone weekend activities as part of a rotating duty schedule
  • Assist in clubs and/or various school activities/programs

Other Expectations: This position is a member of a boarding school faculty. Candidates should be interested in contributing outside of the classroom and becoming fully involved in the student life program. Faculty are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of School life.

JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience teaching writing at the high school or college level
  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree; Master’s degree preferred
  • Student-centered educator, skilled in facilitating student discussion and collaboration.
  • Experience in curriculum design and innovative teaching practices
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively in a variety of formats
  • Strong verbal skills
  • Experience with working with students with different learning styles
  • Ability to engage parents and create healthy relationships with students
