POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for supporting health care needs of students by performance of medical duties ordered by physician, which are developed and directed by the ESA School Nurse. Responsible for maintaining health records on all students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. · Monitor specified medical/health care needs of students with special medical needs, and instruct students to the maximum ability of their independence.

· Administer student medications and medical procedures as directed and requested by physicians.

· Administer first aid, per guidelines of Federal Way Public Schools, American Red Cross, and Department of Health (multi-colored flip chart) within scope of licensure.

· Maintain records under the guidelines established by the ESA School Nurse and Federal Way Public Schools.

· Assist with health screening; maintaining information log; recording results of screenings.

· Maintain confidentiality or provide medical information regarding students according to law and professional ethics guidelines.

· Will be assigned additional nursing duties as appropriate under the Nurse Practice Act and relevant WAC's.

· Serve as member of school health team of the District.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Must have completed an educational program required by Washington State Registered Nurse licensure guidelines

Washington State RN or LPN license

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with children with special health care needs and diverse populations

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

Criminal background clearance

Washington State RN or LPN License - maintained and renewed yearly

Possess and maintain a current district-approved CPR/First Aid card at time of employment. District approved courses include hands-on and written exam

KNOWLEDGE OF:

School board policies and procedures

Neurological/seizure protocol.

Basic proficiency of standard computer software applications

ABILITY TO:

Perform endotracheal or tracheostomy suctioning.

Medication administration and documentation.

Provide respiratory treatment and medication.

Provide gastrostomy, colostomy, catheterization protocol and procedures.

Provide blood glucose monitoring.

Provide care for individuals with special needs and their care providers in a warm and confident manner.

Establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with health care professionals and school staff.

Organize and perform job responsibilities efficiently and independently without close supervision and able to pay strict attention to detail

Speak, read and follow written or verbal communications

Practice effective safety and security within individual work routines

Develop and maintain positive customer relations with staff and service providers

Work collaboratively with District staff and promote teamwork with co-workers

Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct including the requirements of confidentiality

Relate effectively with parents, staff, students and the public in a multicultural and multiracial community

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The employee in this position is required to constantly talk/hear/see, and reach out in front to direct and assist students and handle/grasp throughout their shift up to 50 lbs. The employee is required to frequently sit and walk, bend/stoop, squat/kneel, and use fine finger manipulations. The employee will occasionally be required to stand, lift, carry, twist torso and neck. This position rarely requires climbing/balancing or lifting bench to shoulder or overhead. The employee is required to constantly lift up to 10 lbs; frequently lift up to 25 lbs; and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. Weights over 50 lbs should be done with a mechanical lift or with help from another person. This position will occasionally push/pull 10 - 50 lbs.

This position works 90% of their time inside and 10% outside. Outside work can be in inclement weather. Noise level is high, exposure to outburst of student. Exposure to infectious disease or unpredictable students who can grab, spit, kick, hit and bite. Employee is required to wear protective gloves and masks as directed by the district program.

WORK SCHEDULE

This position typically works, Monday through Friday, times may vary according to student needs.
