This is for a high school level student. This internship is for pay. The hourly rate is $11.08 per hour.

Henrico County offers a variety of challenging hands-on internships performing a variety of responsible tasks relevant to the assigned department.

Essential Duties:
Information Technology High School Intern I - This is a paid internship for the summer of 2021. The rate of pay is $11.08 per hour.

Desired Area of Study: Information Technology, network security, IT systems management, database design and development; web development and design

Expected Start Date: On or around June 21, 2021
Expected End Date: On or around Labor Day
Work Hours: Flexible to work with student who will work between 8 am - 4:30 pm, up to 29 hours per week
Work Location: Information Technology Department, Administration Annex building, 4301 E. Parham Road, Henrico, VA

This is an internship for pay for high school students who will work in the Department of Information Technology.

The intern will be assigned to assist IT staff in the End User Technology Support - IT Service Desk area. The intern may be assigned to assist and perform with any of the tasks related to current projects or business needs relevant to the student's skills and interest.

The intern can expect to provide:
  • Assistance to end users with personal computer hardware and software.
  • Troubleshooting and finding creative solutions to personal computer hardware and software issues.
  • Replace existing personal computers and related peripherals.
  • Installing new hardware such as hard drives, memory, video cards, processors, network cards.
  • Configuring new equipment and systems.
  • Resolving compatibility issues.
  • Installing or upgrading software.
  • Have fun sharing your passion for Technology with others
The intern will work in a collaborative environment with other technical professionals and gain experience working with:
  • Remote support Technology
  • Microsoft products such as Windows 10 and Office 365
  • LAN and WAN network environment
Strong foundational knowledge in a field relevant to internship; excellent interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens integral to the internship; excellent organization and research skills with the ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively; excellent attention to details; excellent knowledge of and familiarity with computer systems with demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer and common software products (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point); ability to multitask and manage priorities; ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a team; and ability to meet assigned deadlines.
Internships are intended to complement the student's academic program so the intern must bring foundational knowledge as well as a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities, clear direction regarding expectations and feedback concerning their performance. Interns will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as broad basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School student studying or with relevant skills, knowledge and abilities related to; prefer a student in the junior or senior year;

Experience: Completion of courses in relevant degree or vocational/technical program; relevant job or volunteer experience;
Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities relevant to the internship.
