POSITION SUMMARY: School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being and academic success of students. School nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems. School nurses work within and outside the school district to develop, monitor, and assess outcomes of nursing care plans. The certificated nurse assists in the development and evaluation of IEP and 504 plans of students with health needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases related duties may also be assigned. Standard I: Nursing Process
  • Uses a systematic approach to problem solving in nursing practiceProvide written Nursing Care Plan for students with significant health problems.Assess student health needs, recommend appropriate action and monitor communicable diseases and other illness.Involvement in CPS referrals in conjunction with counselors, administration and other staff. Nursing evaluation is required in all case involving physical injury.Assess needs of students with long term illness or injury by collaborating with health care providers, student and family including home visit when necessary, to coordinate home instruction as needed.Initiate involvement of outside resources to help with individual student health issues.

Standard II: Program Management
  • Establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health problemsOversee accurate maintenance of student health and immunization records.Conduct screening programs for vision and hearing.Consult with students, parents and staff regarding health needs and services.Complete written reports as required by State or local agencies.Work with the State Health department in the control of communicable diseases.Act as liaison between home, school and community resources regarding health issues.Maintain standard health room procedures with cooperation of Health services assistants, office staff and Principal for day-to-day health room management including medication administration, first aid, illness procedures, BECCA and attendance issues.

Standard III: Professional Responsibilities
  • Identifies, delineates and clarifies the nursing role, promotes quality of care, pursues continued professional enhancement, and demonstrates professional conduct.Maintain First Aid/CPR/AED certification.Participate in continuing professional education through attendance at classes, conferences, etc. Keep apprised of current legislation pertaining to school nurses.Participate in professional conferences with community agencies.Serves as a resource to staff, students, and/or parents concerning health issues.Maintains confidentiality within legal, regulatory, and ethical parameters of Health and Education.

Standard IV: Health Education
  • Assists students, families and the school community to achieve optimal levels of wellness through appropriately designed and delivered health education.Consult and assist classroom staff with health curriculum, i.e., HIV/AIDS, BAT, Family Life, Babysitting.Conduct inservice training for staff regarding Diabetes, Medication Administration, Epi-pen use, bloodborne pathogens, first aid and/or other health matters.Provide Health counseling and information on chronic illness, nutrition, disease prevention and positive lifestyle.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Washington State Educational Staff Associates School Nurse Certificate

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in school nursing or health education

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
Criminal background clearance

Instructional theory and its application
Techniques to motivate student learning via inquiry, discussion, and application of knowledge
Organizing the physical and human elements in the educational setting

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
