POSITION SUMMARY:
The Atlanta Public Schools English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program ensures that the cultural and linguistic needs of all ESOL students and families are met through a caring culture of trust and collaboration. The Bilingual Community Liaison supports school staff by providing information in a language other than English, and that the needs of the limited-English, immigrant, and international parents are addressed. In order to increase the engagement and involvement of limited English-speaking parents in APS, the Bilingual Community Liaison provides interpretation and translation support, classes and workshops for ESOL, immigrant, and international parents and families, and training and professional learning for school and district staff in understanding and supporting the needs of limited English parents.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Provides interpretation support for limited English proficient parents and families at school- and district-related meetings, trainings, and events, and offers guidance and information on school and community concerns to limited English proficient parents and district and school staff
• Provides translation and phone support for the Office of ESOL & World Languages during peak times to meet district, local school, and parent needs
• Conducts trainings, meetings, and workshops on topics that will assist limited English proficient parents in being active participants in the education of their children
• Attends and schedules meetings and events beyond the work day and on weekends to ensure parent participation
• Assists in the distribution of internal and external resources and supports for limited English proficient families
• Works collaboratively with local school staff and district ESOL colleagues to support the academic success and inclusion of the limited English proficient and immigrant students and families
• Collaborates with staff from other programs and departments to ensure that the needs of limited English proficient parents are supported
• Maintains and submits accurate records and documents for school, district, state, and federal reporting.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator. Required to attend scheduled shift, as mandated
Requirements :
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Associate's degree in education, linguistics, communication, international affairs or a related field required
Bachelor's degree in education, linguistics, communication, international affairs or a related field preferred
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
Advanced-mid or higher proficiency in English and Spanish, as demonstrated by educational qualifications, or by Oral Proficiency Instrument (OPI) and Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) required
Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation required
Educational Translation & Interpretation certification preferred
WORK EXPERIENCE:
2 years of interpretation/translation work experience required
2 years of experience working with English Learners, limited English parents, or immigrant families in an educational setting preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and other language indicated in posting as demonstrated by nationally or internationally recognized assessment of proficiency
Proficient in Microsoft Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher
Ability to be self-directed, to work independently and with teams
Excellent time management, recordkeeping, and organizational skills
Ability to support the efforts of team members for parent and community workshops and events
Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders to develop a culture of collaboration and trust while advocating for the limited English and immigrant communities
Ability to work evenings and weekends to provide support to community and parents
