Elementary (K-5) Mathematics Specialist

The goal of the K-5 Mathematics Specialist is to work with students, teachers, the building principal, the K-5 Math Specialist Team and the K-5 Mathematics Department Head to actualize the district vision of excellence in mathematics teaching and learning for all students. A K-5 Mathematics Specialist works with students and with teachers to improve student achievement and increase instructional capacity.

School-based responsibilities include:
Coaching including: (1) Support and promote the learning of students by facilitating adult learning by observing instruction, providing feedback, co-teaching, conducting model lessons, and facilitating pre- and post- lesson conferences; (2) facilitating school-based professional learning (e.g., PLCs, faculty meetings, study groups) that supports district goals and is responsive to the needs of specific school population and needs of teaching staff; (3) planning collaborative classroom visits (shared observations or shared lesson planning/teaching); (4) coordinating data meetings and/or looking at student work sessions; (5) supporting teachers with learning and implementing instructional strategies reaching a range of learners; (6) supporting teacher and principal communication with families about the teaching and learning of mathematics
Supporting the learning of students by collaborating with the building principal in coordinating tiered instruction and intervention including: direct teaching, co-teaching, supporting paraprofessional interventionists.
Supporting teacher and principal communication with families about the teaching and learning of mathematics.

District responsibilities include:
Collaborating with K-5 Math Specialist Team & K-5 Math Department Head on district wide curriculum and assessment initiatives
Facilitating district-wide professional development

Qualifications include:
minimum 5 years successful elementary teaching experience
successful experience teaching mathematics using Investigations curriculum
thorough understanding of Common Core State Standards including the Standards for Math Practice and the 2011 MA Mathematics Framework
strong mathematics content knowledge and mathematics pedagogical content knowledge
thorough knowledge of research-informed mathematics teaching and assessment practices
understanding of effective professional development and coaching strategies targeted to increasing teacher instructional capacity
ability to build professional relationships with teachers and inspire teacher trust and confidence when sharing successful math instructional strategies
highly motivated self-starter who can work independently as well as collaboratively with teachers, other K-5 Mathematics Specialists, and K-5 Math Department Head
strong communication skills
ability to collect and analyze data in order to inform decisions about instruction and help teachers engage in using data in ways that impact instruction
