REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Health Services Coordinator

JOB GOAL:
Work cooperatively with all building staff to assist the management of support services in order to enhance the morale of school district personnel, promote the overall efficiency of the school system, and maximize the educational opportunities available to each child.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Gives minor first aid to ill and injured.
  2. Contacts the school nurses or designated person in case of major illness or serious injury.
  3. Contacts the parents of the ill or injured student in accordance with established health office policy and, if necessary, prepares the student to be transported.
  4. Confers with school nurses regarding student absences for health reasons.
  5. Records and communicates with teachers and other personnel regarding disposition of students sent to the health office.
  6. Maintains and files health office records.
  7. Receives and relays telephone messages pertaining to individual student health problems.
  8. Assists the assistant principal with other office work as time is available.
  9. Assists the school nurses in scheduling and performing routine screening procedures, informing teachers of screening results and following up on referrals.
  10. Assists in communicable disease prevention by reviewing and communicating immunization needs of students.
  11. Is knowledgeable of and able to identify common health concerns of adolescent students, i.e. obesity, acne, depression, etc.
  12. Is knowledgeable of appropriate referral patterns.
  13. Records health office visits, students' symptoms and the disposition in electronic and written records.
  14. Communicates with the school nurses and teacher(s) as necessary.
  15. Supervises students and records medications that need to be taken during school hours.
  16. Demonstrate strong communication skills including:
    1. Demonstrate sensitive to the needs of students and genuinely likes children.
    2. Is steady and even-tempered in working with others.
    3. Projects a positive outlook.
    4. Communicates clearly and effectively.
    5. Is tactful with students and fellow employees.
    6. Uses discretion and respects confidentiality of information entrusted to him/her.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  1. TBD- Contract Days. Salary and calendar year to be evaluated in accordance with the Negotiated Agreement between the Iowa City Education Association and the Iowa City Community School District.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District's policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
