Literacy specialists work extensively with students to address the specific needs of a particular child when regular classroom instruction is not sufficient. They work with the teacher using assessment data and observation to design methods of learning that is most appropriate for each child. The literacy specialists focus on all five of the main components of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. A literacy specialist will need exceptional interpersonal skills, as they will be working with administrators, educators, parents and students. The role of the literacy specialist is part instructor and part coach. These individuals will work with educators to provide research - an evidence based best practices in providing quality literacy instruction.

Minimum Requirements: Master's degree (AA) K-12 education (Valid MS Educator License) with a reading endorsement preferred (174). Minimum of 5 years classroom experience. Very familiar with MTSS process, competency in technology skills, and strong Data analysis skills.

Basic Responsibilities: Prepare lesson plans designed to meet specific needs of students. This is not a tutoring position, but involves direct instruction. Collaborate with the building principal to develop Tier 3 schedules. Manage Madison County Schools required documentation for all Tier 3 students. Monitor student progress based on Madison County Schools policy. Inform parents and teachers of student progress. Collaborate with principals and educators to provide modeling, observations, and professional development on research and evidence-based literacy instruction. Attend any district required professional development/professional meetings.
