General Description

Provides health care assistance to students. Handles routine and non-routine medical situations within standard medical practices. Work is under general supervision and may require special instruction by a health care professional. Contacts are made within and outside the school; may require handling of sensitive information or dealing tactfully with others. Some judgment is required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Admits and discharges sick students in the clinic.
  • Dispenses medication and administers tests to students as required by physicians under state/local guidelines; maintains appropriate medication records and logs.
  • Provides specialized assistance and health care services to students in accordance with physician’s instructions (e.g. catherization for physically handicapped students, assist with nebulizers).
  • Treats minor accidents and health emergencies.
  • Contacts emergency services and parents when necessary; performs first aid and CPR (if trained) until help arrives.
  • Assists school nurse in health screenings, examinations and other medical, health and hygiene procedures.
  • Provides clerical assistance - typing, filing, maintaining records and ordering supplies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Some knowledge of medical conditions, symptoms, medications, treatments and proper hygiene. Some knowledge of childhood growth and development. Demonstrated ability to assess illnesses, injuries, seizures and determine appropriate immediate treatment. Demonstrated ability to obtain appropriate medical assistance to handle emergencies. Demonstrated ability to perform basic clerical tasks. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated ability to work well with students, staff and parents in a professional manner. Education, training or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Requirements

  • Must be First Aid/ CPR, AED certified and maintain current certifications. Strongly prefer, LPN, CNA or EMT.
  • Education, training or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
