Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Director of Leadership Development will lead our flagship development programs for KIPP DC's new and rising school leaders and work to implement and sustain equitable, anti-racist talent pipeline initiatives. This individual will be responsible for the design and execution of the second year of our Rising Leaders development program for new vice-principals and the launch of the first ever full principal-in-residence program. This role contains an ideal balance of vision-setting and large-scale program design with day-to-day program management and school leader development and coaching. This is an especially unique opportunity given the new nature of both of these programs and the room for true leadership and innovation.

There will be no direct reports for this position in the 21-22 school year but we anticipate adding roles in the future. The ideal start date for this role is May or June 2021 but we will be flexible to ensure the best candidate possible. The Director of Leadership Development is an exempt role and will report to the Senior Managing Director of Knowledge and Learning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Principal-in-Residence (PIR) Program
  • Oversee and lead the key components of the PIR program including skill development on a roadmap, evaluation using readiness assessments and and data tracking.
  • Lead formal learning for cohort of up to 10 PIRs.
  • Directly coach each PIR including bi-weekly observations and check-ins and provide additional support to PIRs transitioning into school leadership in the subsequent months.
  • Lead training and support for mentor school leaders who manage PIRs.
  • Lead the change management effort involved in roll out of the new program including: reflection, assessment, and adjustments for improvement.
  • Manage and facilitate communication with stakeholders across the organization who are involved in the development of individual PIRs.

Rising Leaders Program
  • Oversee and lead the Rising Leaders program for new Vice-Principals.
  • Design and launch summer intensive development opportunity for all participants (~2-3 weeks in length).
  • Design, facilitate and support other facilitators in delivering school year formal learning for participants.
  • Lead cohort of individuals who are coaching Rising Leaders through regular learning and reflection.
  • Lead ongoing cohort-building opportunities, regular communication and other program facets.

Other
  • Collaborate with other regional teams to design and coordinate professional development and support for both PIRs and Rising Leaders.
  • Collaborate with other regional leaders to design and strengthen development pipelines across KIPP DC and ensuring alignment between them.
  • Depending on the scope and capacity of the team, may lead other leadership development initiatives such as launching a teacher leader cohort, providing development for deans, etc.


Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 10+ years of work experience in education and/or talent development with demonstrated record of results
  • 3+ years of school leadership experience - ideally as a principal and/or principal manager- with outstanding results
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Deep commitment to racial and educational equity and the building of an organization that reflects the community KIPP DC serves; ability to hold self and others accountable for centering equity
  • A robust record of coaching, mentoring and developing other leaders
  • Successful experience leading effective professional development for adults
  • Outstanding design, project planning and program execution skills
  • Strong ability to build relationships, navigate complicated interpersonal situations and motivate others
  • Strong cultural competency skills, including ability to communicate and work effectively and cultivate relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Flexibility and creativity to succeed in innovative environments
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to KIPP DC's mission and to advancing its antiracist ambition through work with staff, students, alumni, and families
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook
