Location: Transportation, 3833 N. 72nd Street, Omaha, NE 68134

Reports To: Director of Student Transportation

Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 10-Months / Non-Exempt

Position Purpose: The Transportation Supervisor's primary responsibilities include the ability to supervise, coordinate and monitor activities for 75 or more drivers and aides, including: job performance evaluations, maintenance of driver credentials, all pertinent records for staff and students. This individual oversees route procedures, continuously reviewing and up-dating all route data to ensure safety and accuracy, and addressing student needs on all assigned routes. The Transportation Supervisor will drive routes when needed and assist in dispatch, key room, and on phones if necessary. This person must be able to collect and report oral and written follow up documentation of accidents, including accident scene reports, assessing the welfare and safety of individuals on the vehicle, informing parents/guardians, collecting information, and ensuring all required past accident procedures, reports, and drug / alcohol testing are completed. The Transportation Supervisor will take an active role as a liaison with parents and schools resolving issues pertaining to student transportation and have a working knowledge of the community, building locations, district responsibilities, district practices and procedures and safety procedures. This person must have an understanding of the multidimensional responsibilities related to transporting students with diverse needs and backgrounds. While there are scheduled work hours, flexibility is required, and may include hours beyond the normal work day.

Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned by Director and other district administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment: This position may require the ability to use basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must always comply with OPS's guidelines for equipment use.

Travel: Travel within and outside of the Omaha Metro area may be required.

  • Must be able to respond rapidly in emergency situations.
  • Must have organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Work in school building environments.


Interrelations:
  • Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors.
  • Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks.
  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues.
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service.


Employee Punctuality and Appearance
  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • High School Diploma or equivalency.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business in Business Administration, Management or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful supervisory experience; experience in school transportation preferred.
  • Knowledge of job related laws, guidelines and procedures, accident prevention, and safety programs relative to student transportation preferred.
  • Experience in a transportation organization, preferably school bus operations preferred.
  • Effective and diplomatic communication skills both verbally and written required.
  • Experience with group presentations and public speaking required.
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with students information systems, routing and fleet maintenance systems preferred.
  • A demonstrated work ethic that continuously strives to improve customer service.
  • Experience analyzing data, interpreting research findings, preparing reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, develop, and use spreadsheets to present complex data.
  • Bilingual Language skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of Omaha Public Schools' mission, purpose, goals and the role of every employee in achieving each of them.


Terms of Employment

This position is treated as a full-time exempt classified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.

The offer of employment is contingent upon:

  • Obtaining and providing verification of all licenses, certificates, and other requirements for the position (e.g., Paraprofessionals obtaining "Highly Qualified status," etc.), as identified and maintaining all licenses, certificates, and requirements for your position throughout employment.
  • A background check which demonstrates to OPS that background is acceptable for the position.
  • Verification of U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (if required for position offered).
  • Successful completion of a tuberculosis skin test (if required for position offered).
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination to determine ability to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the position.
