Interdisciplinary STEAM Specialist

FLSA Classification:          Exempt

Position Type:                 12-month Staff

Reports to:                       Academic Chair

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:

St. Benedict’s Episcopal School is an independent school of choice for families of children in preschool through 8th grade. The school’s primary focuses are inspiring learning, nurturing growth, and embracing the values of Episcopal education.  Founded in 2009, St. Benedict’s encourages creativity and inquiry-based learning in a caring and nurturing environment. As an institution, we are also deeply committed to the community, and our students, faculty, and staff reflect the diversity of Smyrna and the surrounding area.

The vision of St. Benedict’s Episcopal School is to graduate confident, courageous, compassionate leaders who are respectful of diversity and grounded in faith. Building the strongest possible academic foundation is at the core of what we do. We build this strong core by creating a collaborative learning environment that brings together a diverse body of students and faculty, providing an education grounded in love, faith, and respect.  By the time our students graduate, they are confident learners, self-advocates, and engaged citizens.

Our uniquely diverse student body is a source of strength for our school.  Our students are able to be effective change agents as they move through the world with an understanding that the best decisions are made when diverse perspectives are at the table.  These students know how to work collaboratively with a group of people who represent the diversity of their community.  When they go into the workforce and move into leadership positions, they will know how to ensure that their teams, companies, and communities represent the broader community.   One of the ways that we live out our vision, values, and mission is by maintaining a tuition base that is about half that of other independent schools while offering the same level of education.  In order to achieve this goal, we must be innovative and ensure that spending aligns with the strategic priorities of the school.

The full integration of STEAM is one of our top strategic plan priorities. It is our goal to ensure that our students have an educational environment that helps them move from understanding independent subjects and concepts to being interdisciplinary design thinkers and problem solvers. An integrated approach to learning helps students make connections that deepen their understanding and sharpen transferable skills of critical thinking, synthesis, and research. This priority was set based on the understanding that the traditional learning environment was shifting, not only across the country but within St. Benedict’s as well. Since being founded in 2009, St. Benedict’s has added a grade per year and over 500 students. During this period of expansion, the school has been successful because of our culture of being flexible and innovative, and the integration of a STEAM program will equip us and our students for further innovation.

St. Benedict’s is seeking a full-time Interdisciplinary STEAM Specialist. The candidate for this position should demonstrate a successful track record with STEAM integration and an understanding of design-thinking, curriculum design, maker spaces, coding, and robotics. The STEAM Specialist will work closely with the Academic Chair to identify points of natural integration in the existing curriculum. The Specialist will meet with each grade level to introduce the STEAM curriculum and train the teachers for ease of implementation. They will visit classrooms during the school year to model lessons for teachers, lead activities with students, and encourage an integrated learning mindset among teachers.
