Personal Care Aide (Elementary)

BuffSci is seeking a reliable, punctual, high-energy, culturally competent individual who loves working with youth to make a difference by joining our outstanding team of staff and educators.
BuffSci needs a talented, positive, honest candidate to support our school culture and model strong leadership skills while assisting students in classroom lessons and activities for individual elementary school students.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Personal Care Aide will work one-on-one with a special education student to provide a safe and caring educational environment, assisting with physical and academic needs as outlined in the Individual Education Plan, under the direction of the special education and classroom teachers in:

• • the areas of self-care, ambulation, feeding, toileting, communication, academics (as planned and monitored by the classroom teacher); may also be responsible for using proper safety precautions (gloves) to clean up vomit or other toileting accidents;
  • pushing wheelchairs and/or assisting walkers and with orthotics to other areas of the building for Art, Physical Education, etc.;
  • moving the student from sitting positions to floor or mats and back to chairs;
  • coordinate and assist Classroom Teacher/Team/Special Education Teacher with achieving IEP/teaching objectives, by working with the individual student daily.
    
    

1. Personal Care Aide will accompany the student to all enrichments, specials and lunch/recess. Personal Care Aide will also accompany the student on field trips.

1. Personal Care Aide will demonstrate awareness of any medical concerns: Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and demonstrate awareness of student-assistance protocol with an emphasis on student safety.

1. Personal Care Aide will attend therapy sessions to assist/learn how to reinforce programs in the classroom. If the therapy service provider does not wish for you to be present during a therapy session, you must return back to the home base classroom. You will be expected to assist other students in the classroom during this time.

1. Personal Care Aide should have the ability to adapt easily to unpredictable behaviors in the educational environment, reinforce on task-behavior, work with the individual student to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.

1. Other duties may be assigned by teacher/therapist/principal depending on additional needs of children within the group.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Ability to work closely and cooperatively with students, teachers, administrators, colleagues, and parents/visitors.
• Must be certified in CPR and First Aid or willing to become certified within in sixty (60) days of being hired.
  
  

QUALIFICATIONS
Ideal candidates will possess:

1. Two or more years of post-secondary education OR Graduation from high school, GED or Equivalency Diploma or an equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to indicate the ability to perform required duties.
2. Background clearance from NYS Education Department (NYSED)
3. Interest in and knowledge of working with special needs children.
4. Early childhood or elementary experience is very helpful.
5. Physical condition should not hinder ability to manage behavior/physically challenged students.
