    JOB TITLE: Senior Programmer/Database Administrator

    REPORTS TO: Director-Application Support Services

    WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

    PAY GRADE: IT 6

    PRIMARY PURPOSE:

    The Senior Programmer/Database Administrator is responsible for technical support and development of assigned district application software, including systems analysis, design, programming and testing. He/she also supports, designs, configures and maintains databases throughout the Spring Independent School District. The Senior Programmer/Database Administrator also provides leadership, training, and professional development to programmers/analysts assigned to his/her projects. The Senior Programmer/Database Administrator works with both internal and external entities in support of all system databases.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required:
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in computer science, information systems, or a related field; or an associate's degree with six years of
    • related work experience; or 10 years related work experience
    • At least five years of progressive experience in information systems involving troubleshooting analysis, system configuration, modifications, testing, documentation and deployment duties
    • At least five years of experience programming, debugging, and system design
    • At least five years of experience with the following: JavaScript, XML, SQL, C/C++, Java, Python, and .Net
    Preferred:
    • Familiarity with SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
    • Experience with Scripting and Cognos
    • Experience with eSchool Plus and Schoology


    SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
    • Broad knowledge of current computer hardware and software applications used in educational environments
    • Experience in troubleshooting, configuration, and tuning of a database environment
    • Knowledge of database management software and application tools
    • Project initiation, planning, prioritization and resource management
    • Demonstrated successful delivery of quality application development and support while working in an environment with changing and competing priorities
    • C Experience debugging database issues on live data
    • Thorough knowledge of SQL
    • Experience in troubleshooting analysis, system configuration, modifications, testing, documentation and deployment
    • Ability to assess a situation and develop/implement a solution
    • Comfortable working with production servers
    • Experience in planning, designing and programming complex applications
    • Ability to detect and resolve technical or programming related problems
    • Expertise in working developing systems based upon their requirements
    • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work collaboratively to prioritize and address multiple school-related projects in a dynamic work environment with limited supervision
    • Demonstrate analytical, problem-solving, and research ability

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
    • Plan and implement projects related to district application software systems requiring data import and export.
    • Develop middleware solutions between eSchool and other applications.
    • Work with district applications such as Eduphoria, DecisionEd, Istation, PEIMS Data Plus/TSDS, eSped, eFinance and eSchool Plus to assist in the district's data quality initiative.
    • Assist in developing exception reports-for the public and end users-to ensure data quality and to identify data anomalies within the student information system.
    • Coordinate, recommend, configure, install and maintain the Microsoft SQL servers.
    • Secure eSchool data as it relates to key district information.
    • Analyze existing computer applications and programs for enhancements and performance improvements.
    • Anticipate upcoming data-based projects in conjunction with district's vision and goals.
    • Maintain existing applications and computer programs as requirements change, including changing and testing code as well as maintaining documentation.
    • Assess future requirements for district data needs in support of long-range planning.
    • Advise management on long-term capacity plans and growth.
    • Coordinate, recommend, configure, install and maintain the Microsoft SQL servers.
    • Analyze impact of database changes to the business.
    • Secure data as it relates to key district information.
    • Analyze existing system databases for enhancements and performance improvements.
    • Maintain existing applications and computer programs as requirements change, including changing and testing code as well as maintaining documentation.
    • Test database to ensure everything operates efficiently without error.
    • Optimize queries on live data.
    • Repair program bugs and recover lost data.
    • Continually review processes for improvement.
    • Work closely with development teams with regards to database updates and design.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, prolonged use of computer and network utilities, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. This position will also require both traveling within the district and state wide. Mental demands: Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to interpret TEC and policy; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory, ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.

That number will change soon with the construction of several new facilities – including two middle schools, three ninth-grade centers and a state-of-the-art stadium that will serve the entire district – all funded by a bond referendum approved by voters in 2016.
